Mitsubishi Mirage safety ratings, year by year

What changed across Mitsubishi Mirage model years
The Mirage splits at the 2016 gap: from 2017 onward the side rating, the passenger's side result and the side-pole result all sit lower than in 2015, while the driver's side result does not move. Every year from 2017 through 2024 then repeats the same ratings.
The overall score reaches its highest, 4 stars, in 2015, 2017–2024.

Buying a used Mirage: which year's rating applies
A rating belongs to one model year and one version. Before relying on any figure on this page, match it to the Mirage in front of you.
2015 is the only year with the higher side rating and side-pole result. From 2017 through 2024 the ratings match year for year, so within that span they won't separate a 2017 from a 2024.
NHTSA's crash-test database has no 2016 Mirage, so there is no 2016 row. If a car is described as a 2016, confirm the model year from the VIN, and don't borrow the 2015 or 2017 figures for it.
Each row describes the front-wheel-drive hatchback, the only version NHTSA rated in these years. Confirm the body style from the VIN before relying on the rows, then check the same VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup for open recall work.
Recalls and complaints by model year
NHTSA files these beside each year's crash-test results. They describe what owners and the agency reported afterwards, not how the vehicle was built to perform in a crash.
| Model year | Recall campaigns | Owner complaints | Investigations |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 0 | 3 | 0 |
| 2023 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| 2022 | 0 | 2 | 0 |
| 2021 | 0 | 1 | 0 |
| 2020 | 0 | 1 | 0 |
| 2019 | 0 | 5 | 0 |
| 2018 | 1 | 10 | 0 |
| 2017 | 3 | 28 | 0 |
| 2015 | 2 | 39 | 0 |
Whether a recall was repaired on a particular car is in the manufacturer’s records for that VIN; a dealer or NHTSA’s VIN lookup can confirm it. The recall check by VIN lists the campaigns filed for a model and year.
How NHTSA's ratings work
NHTSA announced new NCAP crash tests and rating criteria in July 2008, including a new overall rating that combines the frontal, side and rollover results. It then postponed the change by a year: the new criteria apply to vehicles tested beginning with model year 2011, not 2010 as first announced.
In NHTSA's own words, its rollover resistance ratings “estimate the risk of rollover if a vehicle is involved in a single-vehicle crash.”
One limit applies to every vehicle here. NHTSA notes that the frontal crash rating “depends on vehicle mass, and cannot be compared across vehicle weight classes” — a full-size truck's frontal stars and a compact car's are not the same measure.

Mitsubishi Mirage Safety FAQ
What NHTSA’s record shows across model years, and what it cannot tell you about one car.
What is the Mitsubishi Mirage safety rating?+
NHTSA has published crash-test ratings for the Mitsubishi Mirage in 9 model years from 2015 to 2024; the 2024 earned 4 out of 5 stars overall. A rating applies to one model year and one body style or drivetrain, so check the year you are actually buying.
Which Mitsubishi Mirage years have the highest safety rating?+
The 2015, 2017–2024 model years earned 4 stars overall, the highest score on record.
Did NHTSA rate every Mitsubishi Mirage model year?+
No. Between 2015 and 2024, NHTSA's crash-test database lists no Mirage for 2016. NHTSA lists the Mirage for 2014, but we found no crash-test rating for that year. NHTSA's crash-test database lists no Mirage for 2025.
Were the Mitsubishi Mirage ratings on this page made under NHTSA's current tests?+
Yes. NHTSA changed its crash tests and rating criteria starting with model year 2011, and the earliest Mirage in its crash-test database from then on is the 2014, so every year on this page falls under the current tests.
Does the rating apply to a used Mirage?+
It applies to the Mirage as built. A used one that has been in a serious crash, rebuilt from salvage or had airbags replaced is no longer the vehicle NHTSA tested. NHTSA's 2024 record lists no recall campaigns; a VIN check shows that car's title brands and reported accidents, plus the recall campaigns filed for its model and year.
Every year’s rating is for the model. The VIN is for the car.
A crash rating can’t see a salvage or rebuilt title, reported accidents or an odometer rollback. The VIN record can.
