Quick Answer

How do I check a Subaru recall by VIN?
Enter the 17-character VIN into the recall check on this page. It is printed on the lower driver-side corner of the windshield, on the driver's door jamb and on the registration. The check decodes the VIN to its exact year, make and model and lists the NHTSA recall campaigns filed for it, free and without an account. The full history report lists the recalls returned for that exact VIN. Whether a repair was done is in the manufacturer's records, which a Subaru dealer or NHTSA's VIN lookup can confirm.
How many recalls does Subaru have?
For the 2024 Crosstrek, the 2022–2024 Forester and the 2022–2023 Outback, NHTSA's recall search returned 8 recall campaigns. NHTSA's recall search matched no 2024 Outback, and no 2022–2023 Crosstrek, so those model-years are not counted. The largest group, 3 of the 8, is filed under power train. Across the make, NHTSA lists recalls on 12 Subaru model names for 2024 alone. The count that matters for a purchase is the one for that car's VIN.
Are there Subaru do-not-drive recalls?
None of the 8 campaigns sampled here, for the 2024 Crosstrek, the 2022–2024 Forester and the 2022–2023 Outback, carries NHTSA's do-not-drive or park-outside warning. Other Subaru models and years can, so check the VIN of the car in front of you.

Which systems Subaru recalls involve

On a 2022 Outback, start with the windshield campaign: its filed remedy is not a repair but Subaru's offer to exchange or repurchase the vehicle. The 2022 Outback also appears in campaigns for the front passenger seat's occupant detection sensors, the engine wiring harness and ECU, and the transmission inhibitor switch.

Sample: the 2024 Crosstrek, the 2022–2024 Forester and the 2022–2023 Outback, the Subaru models with the most US searches. NHTSA lists recalls on 12 Subaru model names for 2024 alone, so this is part of the make's record, not all of it. NHTSA's recall search matched no 2024 Outback, and no 2022–2023 Crosstrek, so those model-years are not counted. NHTSA's own VIN lookup covers them. A campaign is listed under each sampled model NHTSA's search returned it for; its own text sets the versions and VINs it covers, which can be narrower (one engine or body) or wider (other models). A VIN check lists the campaigns filed for one car's exact year, make and model.

A model-year list can’t tell you about one Subaru. Its VIN can.

Recall campaigns, title brands, reported accidents and odometer records follow the VIN.

What the latest Subaru campaigns say

NHTSA's own wording, shortened. A campaign covers a VIN range, so a listed model year does not mean every car of that year is included.

NHTSA 24V227000Reported March 22, 2024

Air bags › Sensor › Occupant classification › Front passenger

Returned for the 2022 Outback in this sample.

Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Outback and Legacy vehicles. A capacitor in the sensors for the Occupant Detection System (ODS) may crack and short circuit, which can prevent the front passenger air bag from deploying in a crash.

Risk: An air bag that does not deploy during a crash can increase the risk of injury.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the ODS sensors on the front passenger seat, free of charge. Owner notifications were mailed February 3, 2025. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WRA-24.

NHTSA 23V755000Reported November 9, 2023

Power train › Automatic transmission › Park/neutral start interlock switch

Returned for the 2022 Forester and 2022–2023 Outback in this sample.

Subaru of America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2021 Crosstrek, 2022 Forester, 2021-2023 Legacy, and Outback vehicles. An insufficient weld may allow water to enter the inhibitor switch, causing it to fail.

Risk: An inoperative inhibitor switch may prevent the reverse lights from illuminating and the rearview camera image from displaying, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the inhibitor switch, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 8, 2024. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's number for this recall is WRQ-23.

NHTSA 23V754000Reported November 9, 2023

Power train › Driveline › Driveshaft

Returned for the 2024 Crosstrek and 2023–2024 Forester in this sample.

Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2024 Crosstrek, Impreza, 2023-2024 Forester, and 2023 WRX vehicles. The front driveshaft assemblies' outer race may develop cracks and break.

Risk: A broken driveshaft can cause a loss of drive power while driving or vehicle rollaway when the vehicle is in park without the parking brake engaged. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the left and right front driveshafts as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 8, 2024. Owners may contact Subaru's customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WRP-23.

NHTSA 23V723000Reported October 26, 2023

Engine and engine cooling

Returned for the 2024 Forester in this sample.

Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2024 Forester vehicles. The engine water pipe may have loose attachment bolts, allowing the pipe to lose its seal and leak coolant.

Risk: Leaking coolant can contact a hot exhaust pipe, increasing the risk of a fire.

Remedy: Subaru’s independent distributor processing facilities will tighten the water pipe attachment bolts. The affected vehicles have not been delivered to dealers or sold to owners and therefore, no owner notification letters will be sent. Owners may contact Subaru's customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Do-not-drive and park-outside warnings

NHTSA flags a campaign when the risk is serious enough that owners are told not to drive the vehicle, or to park it outdoors away from buildings, until the repair is done.

None of the 8 campaigns in this sample carries either flag. That is a statement about these models and years only; a VIN check lists the campaigns filed for one car’s exact year, make and model.

Buying a used Subaru: checking recall status

A recall belongs to a range of VINs, and whether the repair was done belongs to one car. Both questions are answered by the VIN, not the model name.

  • Campaigns cover VIN ranges, not the whole model year, so a 2022 Outback can sit inside the windshield or air bag sensor campaign while another from the same year sits outside it. The year's list tells you what to ask about; the VIN settles whether it applies.

  • To learn whether a campaign is still open on a particular car, give its VIN to a Subaru dealer or enter it in NHTSA's recall lookup. For the windshield campaign, ask the dealer how the exchange or repurchase remedy applies to that VIN, since there is no repair to book.

  • The 2024 Forester water pipe campaign was filed as work done at Subaru's independent distributor processing facilities before the cars reached dealers, with no owner letters sent, so an owner may never have heard of it. Include it when you ask a dealer or run the VIN through NHTSA's lookup.

  • The Subaru customer line printed in most of these campaigns' remedy notices is 1-844-373-6614; where a campaign prints another number, use that one.

How recall repairs and owner notices work

When a manufacturer has to notify owners of a safety defect, federal law requires it to remedy the defect without charge when the vehicle is presented for remedy. The manufacturer chooses how: repairing the vehicle, replacing it with an identical or reasonably equivalent vehicle, or refunding the purchase price less a reasonable allowance for depreciation (49 U.S.C. 30120).

The free remedy has an age limit. It does not apply if the vehicle was bought by its first purchaser more than 15 calendar years before the recall notice was given (49 U.S.C. 30120(g)). Every model year sampled on this page is inside that window.

Owner letters go by first-class mail to each registered owner the manufacturer can identify through state records, no later than 60 days after it files its defect report under Part 573, with a second letter once the remedy is available if it was not at first (49 CFR 577.7). A car bought used, or registered at an old address, can miss both, which is why a used car's recall status is checked by VIN.

Are Subaru recall repairs free?+

Yes, within a legal age limit. Federal law requires the manufacturer to remedy a safety defect without charge, by repair, replacement or a refund less depreciation, whichever it chooses (49 U.S.C. 30120). That duty does not apply if the vehicle was first bought more than 15 calendar years before the recall notice.

How will I be told about a Subaru recall?+

The manufacturer mails a letter by first-class mail to each registered owner it can identify through state records, no later than 60 days after filing its defect report with NHTSA, and a second letter once the remedy is available if it was not at first (49 CFR 577.7). The Subaru customer line printed in most of these campaigns' remedy notices is 1-844-373-6614; where a campaign prints another number, use that one. A car bought used, or registered at an old address, can miss the letters, so check the VIN before you buy.
