How many characters should a VIN have?+
Seventeen. The federal rule states that each VIN shall consist of seventeen characters, and it places a check digit at position nine that validates the other sixteen. A different length on a modern car is a typo or not a VIN.
What is the check digit for?+
It is a calculated value. Mistype a single character and the arithmetic usually fails, which is why a decoder will reject a bad number rather than silently return somebody else's car.
Where do I find the VIN on the car?+
At the base of the windshield on the driver's side, on a sticker in the driver's door jamb, and on the title document. Many cars also stamp it on the firewall or a strut tower.
Why check it in three places?+
Because a mismatch is one of the very few signals that cannot be explained away. Re-tagged and cloned cars fail here first, and the check costs nothing but daylight.
What do the first three characters mean?+
They identify the manufacturer and the type of vehicle. Positions four to eight describe the vehicle's attributes, position ten is the model year and position eleven the assembly plant.

Plates can be swapped, which is why the condition of the plate matters. A windshield plate that looks riveted, disturbed or differently finished from the surrounding trim deserves a second look.
