Every VIN app on the App Store is free to install, and they range from 2.2 MB to 362.3 MB for broadly the same job. What actually separates them is what the free tier covers — and no single app is best for everyone, including ours.

Quick Answer

What is the best VIN check app?
There is no single best. CARFAX New & Used Cars is the most established, at 4.85 from 368,002 ratings, and is the right pick if you are shopping Carfax's own listings. VINwiki is the choice for enthusiast history. CarCheckerVIN is the cheapest way to check an arbitrary car — free decode, record counts shown before you pay, and $14.99 for the full report against Carfax's $44.99.
Are VIN check apps free to use?
All nine are free to install. The free tiers differ completely: Carfax's free report is tied to a car listed for sale on Carfax or one you register as your own, while CarCheckerVIN's free tier decodes any VIN and shows how many records exist on it before you decide to buy.
How big are VIN check apps?
From 2.2 MB to 362.3 MB, read from the App Store on 30 August 2026. CARFAX Car Care is the largest at 362.3 MB because it is a maintenance tracker; Bumper is 165.0 MB with a marketplace attached; CarCheckerVIN is 2.2 MB. Size reflects scope, not quality.

Why one VIN app is 165 times bigger than another

This is the number that surprises people. These apps all describe themselves as vehicle-history tools, and they span from 2.2 MB to 362.3 MB. The explanation is that they are not really doing the same job.

Bar chart of iOS download sizes for nine VIN check apps read from the App Store on 30 August 2026 — CARFAX Car Care 362.3 MB, Plate Lookup 170 MB, Bumper 165 MB, BeenVerified Vehicle Check 130.5 MB, carVertical 97 MB, CARFAX New and Used Cars 90.1 MB, GOODCAR 63.3 MB, VINwiki 12.3 MB and CarCheckerVIN 2.2 MB
Bigger is not worse — Car Care is a maintenance tracker and Bumper carries a marketplace. Size matters at the kerbside, not as a quality signal.

If you are standing next to a car on mobile data with a seller waiting, the difference between 2.2 MB and 362 MB is the difference between checking the car now and checking it later. If you are at home on wi-fi, it does not matter at all.

Or check the VIN without installing anything

The website does everything the app does apart from the camera scan. Free decode, record counts, same $14.99 report.

Which one is actually best for you

A roundup that concludes “ours” every time is an advert. Here is where each of these genuinely wins, including the cases where you should not use us.

Shopping cars already listed on Carfax → CARFAX New & Used Cars

Every used listing there carries a free Carfax report, so the app pays for itself if that is where you are browsing. It is also the most established app in the category by a wide margin — 4.85 from 368,002 ratings, on the App Store since November 2011.

Tracking a car you already own → CARFAX Car Care

Service reminders, maintenance logging and your own car's reported history. It is 362.3 MB because it is a genuine maintenance product rather than a lookup tool, and Carfax puts its user base above 50 million drivers.

Enthusiast history and stories → VINwiki

A different thing entirely: people attach stories and sightings to a VIN. 4.78 from 4,141 ratings and only 12.3 MB. Not a substitute for a title-brand check, but nothing else does what it does.

Checking an arbitrary car, cheaply → CarCheckerVIN

Our case, stated plainly. Free decode on any VIN, camera barcode scan, and the record counts shown before you pay — so you never buy a report on a car with nothing on file. $14.99 for the full report against Carfax's $44.99. We are also the newest app here with no ratings yet, which is a fair thing to hold against us.

The question worth asking before you install any of them

Not “which app is best” but “what does this one give me before I pay?” Every app here is free to download, and that word does most of the marketing work in this category while meaning something different in each case.

Does it decode any VIN free?

Or only cars in its own marketplace? A free tier scoped to a listing is not the same as one scoped to a VIN.

Does it show what's on file first?

Most apps take payment and then reveal what they found, so you can pay full price for a near-empty record.

Does it read the barcode?

The one thing a phone browser genuinely cannot do. If an app does not scan, a website would have served you as well.

Common questions

What is the best VIN check app?
There isn't one answer, and any page that gives you one is selling something. If you are shopping Carfax's own used-car listings, the CARFAX New & Used Cars app is the natural choice — it has a 4.85 rating from 368,002 people and every listing carries a free Carfax report. If you want enthusiast history and stories attached to a VIN, VINwiki is a genuinely different product. If you want to check an arbitrary car cheaply and see what is on file before paying, that is where CarCheckerVIN fits, at $14.99 against Carfax's $44.99.
Are VIN check apps free?
Every app in this comparison is free to install. What differs is what the free tier does. Carfax's free report is tied to a car listed for sale on Carfax or a car you register as your own. Most of the others give you a free decode and then charge for the history. CarCheckerVIN's free tier decodes any VIN and shows how many damage, auction, salvage and photo records exist on it, so you can see whether a paid report is worth buying before you buy one.
Why are some VIN apps so much larger than others?
Because they are doing different jobs. CARFAX Car Care is 362.3 MB because it is a maintenance tracker with a service-shop directory, not a VIN reader. Bumper is 165.0 MB and carries a marketplace. An app that only decodes VINs, reads a barcode and fetches a report needs very little — ours is 2.2 MB. Size is worth knowing when you are installing something at the kerbside on mobile data, but it is not a measure of quality.
Which VIN app has the best ratings?
CARFAX New & Used Cars, at 4.85 from 368,002 ratings, and it is not close on volume — no other app in the category is within an order of magnitude. VINwiki is 4.78 from 4,141 and BeenVerified's Vehicle Check app is 4.72 from 446. CarCheckerVIN has no ratings at all: it was released in August 2026 and is the newest app here by several years.
Do any of these apps scan the VIN barcode?
CarCheckerVIN reads the VIN barcode off the door-jamb sticker or through the windshield with the camera, which is the main reason to use an app rather than a phone browser. A VIN is seventeen characters and 0 and O, 1 and I are near-identical in stamped fonts, so a scan removes the step where mistakes happen. Check each app's own App Store listing for its current feature set before assuming any of them do this — features change with releases.
Is an app better than just using a website?
Only for the camera. Everything else a VIN service does works in a phone browser, and websites do not need 165 MB of storage. The one thing a web page cannot reliably do is read a stamped barcode in a dim car park. If you are checking cars from your sofa, a site is fine; if you are standing at the car, the scan is the difference.

How this comparison was made. All nine apps were read from Apple's public App Store lookup API in a single request on 30 August 2026, so sizes, ratings, minimum iOS versions and release dates are same-moment and comparable. We did not score the apps subjectively, rank them, or test their report contents against each other — those would be opinions dressed as data. Prices for paid reports come from each provider's own published pricing. CarCheckerVIN is our product; every other app here belongs to a competitor and is described from its own App Store listing.
