How a federal title check works

From a state's title record to your report, in five steps

NMVTIS is a reporting system, not an inspection. Each step below is someone reporting something, which is why the report is only as complete as the reporting.

  1. 1States and businesses reportState DMVs, insurers, salvage yards and similar businesses feed title information into NMVTIS, which federal law created in 1992.
  2. 2You enter the VINTitleCheck.us needs only the 17-character VIN. No account is required.
  3. 3You pay $9.98By credit card, debit card or PayPal. There is no subscription and no recurring charge.
  4. 4The report returns four record typesTitle information, brand history, total-loss data and salvage records, where they exist for that VIN.
  5. 5You read it with the car in front of youCompare it with the physical title and have the car inspected. TitleCheck.us itself recommends an independent inspection.

What TitleCheck.us Is

TitleCheck.us is the consumer storefront for NMVTIS title reports from Auto Data Direct. The offer is simple and published on the homepage: $9.98 per report, a VIN is all you need, no sign-up, subscription or recurring fees, and you can email a copy to yourself or someone else.

It is honest about what it is. The site calls the report a title check, describes it as an inexpensive first step in used-vehicle research, and tells buyers to get an independent inspection before buying. That framing is right: a federal title check is a narrow, reliable product, not a full history.

Two names, one company

  • TitleCheck.us is listed by the DOJ as an approved provider for consumers.
  • Auto Data Direct (add123.com) is listed by the DOJ among providers that serve commercial customers only.
  • Same source. TitleCheck.us says its reports are NMVTIS title check reports from Auto Data Direct.

The Four Record Types in a Title Check

TitleCheck.us lists four things the report contains, and they are the core of NMVTIS. Title information shows the current state of title and when it was issued, earlier titles reported by other states, and the odometer reading recorded each time a title was issued. Brand history shows labels like Junk or Flood that a state put on the title.

Total-loss data shows whether an insurer reported the car as a total loss. Salvage records show whether a salvage auction, parts recycler, rebuilder or similar business handled the car. Together they answer the question a title check is for: has this car ever been written off, branded or sold for salvage?

What an NMVTIS title check contains: title information, brand history, total loss, salvage

What a Title Check Leaves Out by Design

A title check reports titles. It does not report a repaired crash that never led to a total loss or a brand; the Department of Justice's own disclaimer says damage reaches NMVTIS when an insurer declares a total loss or a state brands the title. It does not include service history, and it does not include auction photos.

None of that is a flaw in TitleCheck.us. It is the scope of the federal system. It does mean a clean title check tells you the car has no reported brand, total loss or salvage record, which is valuable, and not that the car has never been damaged.

When $9.98 Is Enough, and When It Is Not

A quick way to decide.

Enough: checking a title

You want to know whether the car has a brand, a total loss or a salvage record before a private sale. A title check answers exactly that.

Enough: screening many cars

At its price, a title check is a cheap way to rule cars out before you spend on anything deeper.

Not enough: judging damage

If the car may have been auctioned, the auction photos show the damage in a way no title record can.

Not enough: the whole picture

For the car you are about to buy, read the title record alongside auction history, then have it inspected.
