Massachusetts car inspection — the $35 sticker, the 7-day rule and Lemon Aid.
Every vehicle registered in Massachusetts gets a safety inspection once a year, and most newer cars get an emissions test in the same visit. It costs $35 at any of more than 1,800 licensed stations. Bought a car? It must be inspected within 7 days of being registered to you. If it fails, you have 60 days to fix it, with one free retest at the same station. Here is what's checked, what happens on a failure, and when the Lemon Aid law lets you return a used car.

Quick Answer
- How much is a car inspection in Massachusetts?
- $35 for a car, pickup, minivan or SUV of 10,000 lb GVWR or less, set by state regulation since July 1, 2014 (it was $29 before). A motorcycle is $15, and a commercial inspection is $35 plus labor. No fee is due if the inspection isn't completed, and the first retest within 60 days at the same station is free.
- How long do you have to get a car inspected after buying it in Massachusetts?
- 7 days from the date it's registered to you. The program site puts it plainly: state law requires a vehicle to be inspected "within seven days of its registration after a change of ownership." The same 7 days apply to a car bought from an out-of-state dealer once it's registered here.
- What happens if your car fails inspection in Massachusetts?
- It gets a rejection sticker with a black R. Safety defects must be fixed before you keep driving; after that the sticker lets you drive for up to 60 days while you arrange the retest. An emissions failure must be repaired and pass, or get a waiver or hardship extension, within 60 days, or the registration can be suspended.
Four steps to a Massachusetts inspection
The station checks your registration, plate and VIN against the state's records before it starts.
- 1Bring a valid registrationRegistration, plate, VIN and description must all match the station's data, or the inspection can't go ahead.
- 2Go to any licensed stationMore than 1,800 stations; first come, first served. A safety inspection takes about 12 minutes.
- 314 systems, plus OBDBrakes, steering, lights, tires, glass and more, then a scan of the car's computer if it's in the emissions years.
- 4Fix within 60 days if rejectedBack to the same station for one free retest. Another station charges the full fee.
How the Massachusetts Inspection Works
Massachusetts Vehicle Check is run jointly by MassDEP and the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Its rule is simple: "All vehicles registered in Massachusetts must receive a safety inspection each year, upon the expiration of their windshield sticker." Medium- and light-duty vehicles with on-board diagnostics in the 14 most recent model years also get an emissions test, done at the same visit. You can renew early, and the old sticker comes off when the new one goes on.
The emissions test is a scan of the car's computer, not a tailpipe test. A car fails if the check-engine light is commanded on, or if the computer hasn't finished enough of its self-checks ("readiness"). Massachusetts dropped dynamometer tailpipe testing on October 1, 2008, when the test also became annual.
Massachusetts Inspection Fees
Fees are set by state regulation; these are the program's figures as of July 1, 2014, read on 23 October 2026.
| Inspection | Fee | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Non-commercial: cars, minivans, pickups and SUVs up to 10,000 lb GVWR | $35.00 | Annual |
| Commercial motor vehicle, 10,001 lb GVWR and up | $35.00 + labor | Annual |
| 7D school-transport vehicle | $35.00 | Twice a year |
| Motorcycle | $15.00 | Annual |
| First retest, same station, within 60 days | Free | Once per failure |
| Challenge inspection through the RMV | Free if it passes | Ask within 2 days |
No fee is due for an inspection that isn't completed, or one that can't proceed because the registration data doesn't match.

What a Massachusetts Inspection Checks
From the non-commercial procedure in 540 CMR 4.04, which the inspector follows item by item.
Brakes
The inspector drives the car; from 20 mph the foot brake must stop a passenger car within 30 feet.
Tires
Less than 2/32 inch of tread in any original groove fails, as do studded tires between May 1 and November 1.
Glass
A chip over 1 inch in the wiper area, or over 2 inches outside it, fails. Tint may only reach the AS-1 line.
Lights and airbags
Every factory lamp must work. On cars 10 or fewer model years old, a deployed or missing airbag fails.
Frame and body
Rusted or cracked structural parts fail, and a car can't be raised or lowered more than 2 inches.
Exhaust and gas cap
Visible black or blue smoke fails, and so does a missing, defective or ill-fitting gas cap.
Buying a Used Car: the 7-Day Rule and Lemon Aid
Once a car you bought is registered to you, it has 7 days to be inspected, emissions included, whether it already wears a sticker or not. Dealers must take old stickers off a used car before delivering it, and must post a "Refund Rights" notice on its left front window.
The Lemon Aid law is the reason to inspect early. The program site says you can void the sale of a used vehicle if it's inspected within 7 calendar days of purchase and fails, the repairs are estimated at more than 10% of the price, and you physically return the car within 14 calendar days. The station must give you a report of the reasons and a repair estimate. Note that the dealer refund notice printed in 940 CMR 5.04 still says 10 days, so return the car as soon as you can and check the dates in your own paperwork.
Before you sign
- 7 days: the failure must come within a week of purchase.
- No hardship extension: it isn't available for the post-purchase inspection.
- Waivers: don't carry over when a car is sold.
- Abuse or a new accident: defects caused after the sale don't count.

If Your Car Fails
A failing car gets a rejection sticker with a black R; a pass gets a sticker with a black number for the expiry month. The rejection sticker "authorizes the operation of a motor vehicle for a period of 60 calendar days after inspection" (20 for motorcycles), but only once any safety defects are fixed. Driving with unrepaired safety defects can get you cited.
For an emissions failure you have 60 days to repair the car and pass, or to obtain a waiver or a hardship extension. After that the car may not be driven and the registration can be suspended. The 60 days run from the original inspection, and only one retest is free. If you think the result is wrong, you can ask the RMV for a challenge inspection within 2 days (not counting Sundays and holidays); it's free if the car passes.
Common traps
- Safety defects: fix them before you drive on.
- A different station: charges the full fee for the retest.
- Day 61: the registration can be suspended.
- Selling it unfixed: the new owner pays for the next test.
Emissions Waivers and Hardship Extensions
If a Registered Emissions Repair Technician has tried to fix the car and it still fails the retest, it may qualify for a one-year waiver. A major repair can qualify for a one-year, non-renewable hardship extension instead.
| Vehicle age | Waiver: repairs spent | Hardship: repair estimate |
|---|---|---|
| 5 model years old or newer | $1,175 | $1,763 |
| 6 to 10 model years old | $1,075 | $1,613 |
| More than 10 model years old | $975 | $1,463 |
Program figures read on 23 October 2026. The regulation's base amounts ($750, $650, $550) have been adjusted for inflation every year since 2010. No waiver while misfire, catalytic-converter or hybrid-battery codes are present; call 1-844-358-0135 to start.
Who Skips the Emissions Test
These vehicles still need the annual safety inspection. From the program's vehicles page and 310 CMR 60.02.
Built before model year 2012
Outside the 14 newest model years. Excessive smoke still fails the safety part.
All-electric vehicles
Vehicles operated exclusively by electric power.
New cars, first registration
They get an OBD advisory scan instead, often at the dealer's pre-delivery inspection.
Motorcycles and mopeds
Motorcycles still get a safety inspection under their own procedure.
Street rods and custom vehicles
When registered as such with the RMV.
Off-road equipment
Tracked vehicles, ATVs and similar machines not built for Massachusetts roads.
Out of State When the Sticker Expires
If your Massachusetts-registered car is away when its sticker runs out, send the RMV an Out-of-State Verification for Vehicle Inspection form with the other state's passing receipt, or a note that the state doesn't inspect, so the registration isn't suspended automatically.
Back home, you have 15 days to get a Massachusetts inspection if the car was inspected elsewhere, and 3 days if it came from a state with no inspection.
