How a free Carfax ends up on a listing, in five steps
The report is free at the end of the chain because someone paid at the start of it. The last two steps are the ones buyers skip.

Why Some Autotrader Listings Have a Free Carfax and Others Don't
Autotrader carries cars from dealers and from private sellers. Kelley Blue Book, an Autotrader partner, described it this way in 2020: many used listings include a link to a free Carfax report, and shoppers can filter by vehicle history. The word that matters is “many”.
The link is there when the seller provides it. Carfax says thousands of dealers subscribe to its dealer service and use it to give customers free reports. A dealer with that subscription can attach a report to every car on the lot; a private seller selling one car usually has nothing to attach unless they bought a report themselves.
So the absence of a Carfax link tells you who is selling more than what the car has been through. It is still worth asking about, and it is the moment to run the VIN yourself.
Three reasons there is no link
- The seller did not pay for it. The free link exists because a dealer subscribes. A private seller, or a dealer without a subscription, has nothing to link.
- The seller chose not to include it. Including a report is the seller's call. A missing link is not proof of a bad history, but it is a reason to ask.
- The car is listed with a different report. Autotrader's own vehicle history tool is built on AutoCheck. A listing can show one company's report and not the other's.
Autotrader's Own VIN Check Is AutoCheck, Not Carfax
Search for a free Carfax “by VIN” on Autotrader and you land on its Vehicle History Report & VIN Check page. Autotrader describes it as a free search that gives you the number of records in the full AutoCheck Vehicle History Report. AutoCheck is Experian's product, not Carfax's.
That makes two different things easy to confuse. The free Carfax link on a listing is a whole report, paid for by the dealer. The free search on Autotrader's VIN page is a count of AutoCheck records, with the report itself behind a payment. Neither gets you a free Carfax for a car whose seller did not provide one.
The two companies also draw on different sources, which is why a car can look cleaner in one than the other. If you have both, read both.
Where a Free Carfax Report Actually Comes From
Carfax lists the routes itself. Autotrader is one place a dealer's free report can show up, not a source of free reports in its own right.

Private-Seller Listings: The Report Nobody Paid For
Private sellers are where the free report most often goes missing. When Kelley Blue Book described Autotrader's private-seller ads in 2020, adding a vehicle history report cost the seller $15 with a basic or featured ad and came included with the premium ad. A seller on a basic ad who skipped it had no report to show.
Carfax's advice for this case is simple: ask the seller for the report, and if they do not have one or seem reluctant, get it yourself. The cost of a report is small next to what it can save you on a car with a hidden past.
Either way, run the VIN before you arrange a viewing, not after you have driven across town.
Before You Trust the Free Report on a Listing
A free report is a real report. These four checks make sure it is the right one, and recent enough to rely on.
Match the VIN three ways
The VIN on the report, on the car’s dashboard or door jamb, and on the title should be identical. Listing mistakes happen, and a copied report can belong to another car.
Look at the report date
Records keep arriving after a report is run. If the free report is old, run a fresh one. The Carfax Buyback Guarantee only counts a report dated within 30 days before purchase.
Read the title and total-loss lines
An accident line gets the attention, but a branded title or an insurance total loss changes what the car is worth and whether a bank will finance it.
Still get the car inspected
Carfax recommends a test drive and an inspection by a qualified mechanic, typically $100 to $150. No report sees damage that was never reported.
