Quick Answer

What is a Carfax VIN decoder and is there a free one?
A VIN decoder turns a car's 17-character VIN into readable details — make, model, year, engine, and plant. CarCheckerVIN offers a free VIN decoder and validator that also runs an NMVTIS-backed title-status preview, with no sign-up. Carfax decodes the same standardized VIN structure, but its full history report is a paid $44.99 product.
How do I verify that a VIN is valid?
A valid VIN is exactly 17 characters, contains no I, O, or Q, and passes a check-digit teston the 9th character. Our tool validates all three automatically. A VIN that fails is either mistyped or, on a car you're inspecting, worth a much closer look.
What does decoding a VIN cost?
Nothing — decoding and validating a VIN is free, and you also get a free NMVTIS-backed title preview. Only the full history timeline is paid, at $14.99versus Carfax's $44.99.

How a VIN is structured

Every VIN since 1981 follows the same 17-character standard. Decoding it means reading each section — and validating it means confirming the check digit adds up.

Positions 1-3 (WMI)

World Manufacturer Identifier — the country, region, and manufacturer that built the vehicle.

Positions 4-8 (VDS)

Vehicle Descriptor Section — model, body style, engine type, restraint system, and series.

Position 9 (check digit)

A calculated checksum that validates the whole VIN and helps catch typos or tampering.

Positions 10-17 (VIS)

Vehicle Identifier Section — model year, assembly plant, and the unique serial number.

Decoder vs full history report

Decoding tells you what a car is. A history report tells you what a car has been through. Both start from the same VIN.

Free decode: country, maker, model, body style, engine, model year, and plant.

Free validation: 17-character length, allowed characters, and check-digit test.

Free NMVTIS preview: whether the title comes back clean or carries a brand.

Paid $14.99 report: full accident, odometer, salvage, theft, and recall timeline.

CarCheckerVIN is an independent vehicle history service and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or owned by Carfax.

Frequently asked

What is a Carfax VIN decoder?

A VIN decoder reads the 17 characters of a Vehicle Identification Number and translates them into readable details — country of origin, manufacturer, model, body style, engine, model year, and assembly plant. Carfax and other providers all decode the same standardized VIN structure. CarCheckerVIN's decoder is free and adds an NMVTIS-backed title-status preview on top of the basic decode.

How do I validate or verify a VIN?

A valid VIN is exactly 17 characters, uses no I, O, or Q (to avoid confusion with 1 and 0), and passes a check-digit test: the 9th character is a mathematical checksum of the other 16. Our decoder validates length, allowed characters, and the check digit automatically. If a VIN fails validation, it may be mistyped or, on a car you're inspecting, potentially tampered with.

Is the VIN decoder free?

Yes — decoding and validating a VIN is free with no sign-up or credit card, and you'll also see a free NMVTIS-backed preview of the title status. The complete history timeline (full accident and odometer detail) is a $14.99 report, roughly a third of Carfax's $44.99.

Where do I find the VIN to decode?

Look through the windshield at the driver-side corner of the dashboard, on the driver-side door-jamb sticker, or on the vehicle's title, registration, and insurance card. Motorcycles show it on the steering neck or frame; trailers on the tongue or frame rail. Enter those 17 characters in the tool above.

What does the check digit in a VIN actually do?

The 9th character is a check digit calculated from a weighted sum of the other 16 characters. It exists to catch transcription errors and flag altered numbers. Our validator recomputes it: if the printed check digit doesn't match the calculation, the VIN is either mistyped or suspect — a useful early warning when inspecting a car in person.
