LookupAPlate Review — What a Free Plate Search Shows.

LookupAPlate.com is a free license plate lookup for all US states, and a community site where anyone can report a bad driver against a plate. A search identifies the vehicle and shows its specs and recalls; owner details are passed to a partner service and need a lawful reason. We cover what a search returns, where it says the data comes from, and what to know before you post.

Quick Answer

Is LookupAPlate free?
Yes, the plate search is. Its home page says you can search a plate in any US state for free, without registering or giving personal information, and see vehicle details, recalls and any community posts about that plate.
Can LookupAPlate tell me who owns a car?
Not by itself. It says you can request ownership details from its partner service for valid reasons, and that a name or address needs a reason the Driver's Privacy Protection Act permits, such as insurance claims, litigation or vehicle safety and theft.
Where does LookupAPlate get its data?
Its home page names NMVTIS, car auction websites, car manufacturers and dealers, "and others". When we read it, the page said the database was updated on October 10, 2026. LookupAPlate does not appear on the Justice Department's list of the 12 companies approved to sell NMVTIS reports to consumers.

How a plate search turns into a full vehicle check

A plate identifies a vehicle today. The VIN is what its history is filed under.

  1. 1Search the plate and stateA free lookup identifies the vehicle the plate is registered to.
  2. 2Get the VINPlates move between cars; the VIN stays with this one for life.
  3. 3Match it to the carRead the VIN on the dashboard and door jamb and compare.
  4. 4Run the VINTitle brands, salvage records and odometer readings are filed by VIN.

What LookupAPlate Does

LookupAPlate.com does two things. It is a free license plate search: enter the plate, pick the state, and it identifies the vehicle, with specifications, recalls and, by its description, sale history and accident history where it has them. And it is a community platform where anyone can post comments, pictures and videos about a plate's driving: speeding, road rage, drunk driving.

It also checks whether a vanity plate is available. Its home page says no account is needed, and it does not ask for personal information to search.

Before you search or post

  • Owner details: need a reason the DPPA allows.
  • Posts are public: anyone who searches the plate sees them.
  • Plates move: the car on a plate can change.
  • Its terms: the page didn't load when we checked.

Why a Plate Search Won't Name the Owner

The Driver's Privacy Protection Act restricts who may get the personal information in state motor vehicle records, such as a name, address or photo. LookupAPlate's own summary of the permitted uses lists motor vehicle or driver safety and theft, government agencies, litigation, debt recovery, insurers and claim investigation, licensed private investigators, employment, consumer authorities, with others varying by state.

So the free search identifies the vehicle and stops there. For the owner, LookupAPlate points to a partner service, and notes the traditional route: a DPPA form filed with the DMV. Curiosity about another driver is not on the list.

Before You Post a Bad-Driver Report

Its bad-driver reports are public. Anyone who searches that plate sees the comment, the pictures and the video, and LookupAPlate's home page frames public naming as a deterrent to bad driving. Its recent-reports feed shows plates and car models next to the comments.

Before you post, keep it to what you saw, avoid faces and other identifying details of people, and remember that a plate can change hands: the car you report today may belong to someone else next year. For anything dangerous, the police are the people who can act on it.

Is LookupAPlate an NMVTIS Provider?

LookupAPlate does not appear on the Justice Department's list of the 12 companies approved to sell NMVTIS reports to consumers. Its home page names NMVTIS among its data sources, alongside auction sites, carmakers and dealers.

For a used-car purchase, use the plate to get the VIN, check the VIN on the car itself, and run the history by VIN, where title brands, salvage records and odometer readings are filed.
