Selling or buying an RV, in five steps

What an RV Bill of Sale Is For
“RV” covers two kinds of vehicle as far as the paperwork goes. A motorhome or camper van has its own engine and is titled like any other motor vehicle. A travel trailer, fifth wheel or pop-up is a trailer, and some states, Texas and Maine among them, decide whether to title one by its weight. The bill of sale records the deal either way.
For a titled RV, the title moves ownership and the bill of sale backs it up with the price, the date and what was included. For an untitled towable, the bill of sale can be the main evidence that ownership changed hands, and a few states say exactly what has to go with it.
It protects the seller too: a dated record of when the RV stopped being theirs, which helps if it is ticketed or towed after the sale.
Some states have their own form
Where a state publishes an official bill of sale, like West Virginia's DMV-7-TR for a motor vehicle, trailer or boat, use it for the state filing and keep ours as your own signed record. Our bill of sale guide lists each state's form.
Motorhomes and camper vans

What to Put on an RV Bill of Sale
Six groups of details, all of them on our free form. The GVWR and the odometer are the two that change what the paperwork needs.
Seller and buyer
Full names, addresses and phone numbers for both sides, exactly as they will appear on the title application.
VIN and type
The VIN from the RV's own label, and the type: Class A, B or C motorhome, travel trailer, fifth wheel or truck camper.
Length and GVWR
GVWR decides whether a motorhome needs an odometer statement. On a towable, weight can decide whether a title exists at all.
Odometer
Motorhomes only: the miles shown, and whether that is the actual mileage, over the mechanical limit, not actual, or exempt.
Price and what is included
The price, the date, how it was paid, and what goes with the RV: awning, generator, hitch, furniture. Sold as is, with any lien listed.
Signatures
Both parties sign and print their names. A notary block is there for the states that require one.

Federal odometer rules skip three kinds of vehicle, and RVs fall into all three. A vehicle that is not self-propelled needs no disclosure, which covers every travel trailer, fifth wheel and pop-up. Neither does a vehicle with a GVWR over 16,000 lbs. And a vehicle ages out: model year 2010 or older once 10 years have passed since January 1 of its model year, 2011 or newer once 20 have.
That leaves a motorhome or camper van at or under 16,000 lbs GVWR, of model year 2011 or newer for a sale in 2026. For those, the seller discloses the mileage on the title itself, not on a separate document (49 CFR 580.5). When a title has no space for it, the state supplies a secure form: California's REG 262 is printed on security paper, which the DMV says makes it compliant with federal odometer disclosure regulations.
Our form records the reading either way, with a box for each case: actual mileage, over the mechanical limit, not the actual mileage, or exempt.
Where the GVWR is printed
On the same certification label as the VIN. If a seller says a motorhome is over 16,000 lbs and exempt, the label settles it, not the listing.
Where to Find an RV's VIN
Copy the VIN onto the bill of sale from the RV itself, not from a listing or old paperwork. Federal rules say where the label goes, and it differs by kind of RV.
Motorhomes
The hinge pillar, door-latch post or door edge next to the driver's seat. Failing that, the left side of the instrument panel, then the inside of the driver's door.
Built in stages
A motorhome finished on another maker's chassis carries a label from each stage. The later label must not cover the earlier one, and each carries the VIN.
Towables
Travel trailers, fifth wheels and pop-ups carry the label on the forward half of the left side, readable from outside.
Untitled Campers and Travel Trailers
A towable RV may never have had a title, and then the bill of sale does more of the work. Four states, read from their own agency or statute.
For an untitled camper or travel trailer, Montana law requires a bill of sale and an affidavit sworn before a notary.
Indiana accepts a bill of sale as proof of ownership for a pop-up trailer bought before 1 July 2016.
Maine's title law exempts a trailer with an unladen weight of 3,000 lbs or less. Heavier ones are titled if they are model year 2001 or newer, as of January 1, 2026.
A manufactured trailer over 4,000 lbs gross weight must be titled. At or under 4,000 lbs, a used trailer transfers with a bill of sale plus the registration receipt.
Weight rules for towables are covered in more detail, state by state, in our trailer bill of sale guide. A motorhome is a motor vehicle, so these trailer exemptions do not apply to it.
Does an RV Bill of Sale Need to Be Notarized?
In most states, no. From our review of each state's official bill-of-sale rules, Louisiana and West Virginia require a notarized bill of sale. West Virginia's official form DMV-7-TR, a bill of sale for a motor vehicle, trailer or boat, carries “NOTARY IS REQUIRED” in its heading.
Another 10 states require notarization only in specific situations: Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Wyoming. For RVs, Montana's rule is the one to know: an untitled camper or travel trailer needs a bill of sale and an affidavit sworn before a notary.

A notary is not a check
A notary confirms who signed, not what was sold. It says nothing about a lien, a salvage brand or a rolled-back odometer. That is what the VIN check is for.

Match the label to the title
Find the certification label and compare its VIN with the title, character for character. On a staged motorhome, check each label.
Run the VIN
A decode confirms the year, maker and model. The full report lists the title brands, lien records and odometer readings on file.
Ask for the right document
A title for a titled RV. For a light towable in a state that does not title it, the registration and the bill of sale.

Is a camper treated like an RV on the paperwork?+
It depends on whether it moves under its own power. A camper van or motorhome is a motor vehicle: titled, with a VIN label by the driver's door and, unless exempt, an odometer statement. A travel trailer, fifth wheel or pop-up camper is a trailer: no odometer statement, a VIN label on the front half of the left side, and in states like Texas and Maine a title that depends on weight.
Where is the VIN on an RV?+
On a motorhome, federal rules put the certification label, which carries the VIN, on the hinge pillar, door-latch post or door edge next to the driver's seat, or failing that on the left side of the instrument panel. A motorhome built in stages carries a label from each stage, and each carries the VIN. On a travel trailer or fifth wheel, the label goes on the forward half of the left side.
What if the motorhome is over 16,000 lbs?+
Then federal odometer disclosure does not apply to it, whatever its age or mileage. Read the GVWR off the certification label rather than a listing, and tick the exempt box on our form. Recording the mileage anyway costs nothing and gives the buyer a reading to compare with the records.
How do I check a used RV before I buy it?+
Find the certification label and make sure its VIN matches the title. Then run the VIN: a decode confirms the year, maker and model, and the full report lists the title brands, lien records and odometer readings on file. Ask for the title, or in a state that does not title light trailers, the registration, before you pay.
