Sit in the driver's seat and check the restraints: the steering-wheel airbag cover should sit flush with even seams, the knee panel under the column should be tight and match the dash, and the driver's belt should lock on a sharp pull and retract fully.
Forward collision and lane departure warning were standard, so look at the radar behind the front emblem and the camera at the top of the windshield for damage, an aftermarket grille or replaced glass, and make sure no warnings stay lit.

One limit applies to every vehicle here. NHTSA notes that the frontal crash rating “depends on vehicle mass, and cannot be compared across vehicle weight classes” — a full-size truck's frontal stars and a compact car's are not the same measure.
