Virginia state inspection — what it costs, what's checked, and what happens if you fail.
Virginia still inspects every car, every year. Any vehicle registered in Virginia and driven or parked on a highway needs a safety inspection at an official inspection station, then again within 12 months of that month. A station may charge at most $20 for a car. A failing car gets a rejection sticker good for 15 days, and the same station can recheck the fixed items for $1. If you live in Northern Virginia, there's also an emissions test every two years. Here is the State Police checklist, the deadlines, the rules for new residents, and where the emissions program applies.

Quick Answer
- How much is a Virginia state inspection?
- At most $20 for a car, pickup, trailer or motor home, $12 for a motorcycle or autocycle, and $51 for a tractor truck, a truck of 26,000 lb GVWR or more, or a vehicle seating more than 15. These are the Code's maximums (§ 46.2-1167), in place since July 1, 2019. A reinspection at the same station within the rejection sticker's 15 days costs no more than $1.
- How often do you need a state inspection in Virginia?
- Every year. The Code requires a reinspection "within 12 months of the month of the first inspection and at least once every 12 months thereafter." The sticker shows the month and expires at the end of its last day. The State Police don't mail reminders.
- Does Virginia require an emissions test?
- Only in Northern Virginia: the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford, and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park. Vehicles there of 10,000 lb or less, less than 25 model years old, test every two years, for up to $30. New cars are exempt for their first four model years.
Four steps to a Virginia inspection
No reminder comes in the mail, so the sticker on your windshield is the only notice you get.
- 1Check the sticker monthIt expires at the end of the last day of the month shown on it.
- 2Find an official stationOnly State Police–designated stations can inspect. Walk-in or appointment, the station decides.
- 3Get the full inspectionBrakes, lights, steering, tires, glass, exhaust, air bags and more, every time.
- 4Fix within 15 days if rejectedBack to the same station for a $1 recheck of the failed items.
How Virginia's Safety Inspection Works
The rule is in Code of Virginia § 46.2-1157: the owner or operator of any vehicle "registered in Virginia and operated or parked on a highway within the Commonwealth shall submit his vehicle to an inspection of its mechanism and equipment by an official inspection station." The Superintendent of State Police designates and supervises those stations, and only a certified safety inspector can do the work. "Each inspection shall be a complete inspection."
It's annual. After the first inspection the vehicle "shall be reinspected within 12 months of the month of the first inspection and at least once every 12 months thereafter." The sticker goes at the bottom left of the windshield and shows the month number; a January sticker, in the regulation's example, "expires at 12:00:00 a.m. on February 1." Keep the original inspection receipt in the car: the State Police say the law requires it, and it's how you replace a lost sticker for free.
Virginia Inspection Fees
Maximum fees under Code § 46.2-1167, confirmed by the State Police and their 2026 inspection manual, read on 22 October 2026.
| Vehicle | Maximum fee | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Cars, pickups, trailers, motor homes ("any other vehicle") | $20 | $0.70 goes to the State Police |
| Motorcycle or autocycle | $12 | $2 of a motorcycle's fee goes to the State Police |
| Tractor truck, truck 26,000 lb GVWR+, vehicle seating 16+ | $51 | |
| Reinspection at the same station, within the rejection sticker's validity | $1 | Only the failed items are rechecked |
| Reinspection elsewhere, or after the rejection sticker expires | Full fee | A complete inspection |

What a Virginia Inspection Checks
From the State Police inspection procedure and the 2026 Official Motor Vehicle Safety Inspection Manual.
Brakes
Pads, rotors, linings, drums, leaks and fluid, and the parking brake. Linings or pads worn below 2/32 inch fail.
Lights and horn
Headlights for approved type, aim and output, every other lamp, and a horn audible for at least 200 feet.
Steering and suspension
The front end is raised to check bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, wheel bearings, springs and shocks.
Tires and wheels
Tread below 2/32 inch in two adjacent grooves fails, as do mixed radial and bias-ply tires and cracked wheels.
Glass and mirrors
Safety glass, cracks and chips over the limits, and mirrors that show the road 200 feet behind. Unauthorized stickers come off.
Exhaust, emissions parts, air bags
Exhaust leaks, the catalytic converter and filler pipe on 1973 and newer cars, and the air bag warning light.
The Rejection Sticker
A vehicle that fails gets a rejection sticker in place of an approval. By § 46.2-1158 it's "valid for 15 calendar days beyond the day of issuance," and during that time you can't be charged for the equipment violations the inspection covers. The regulation adds that it "places no travel restriction on the operation of the vehicle," though you remain responsible for any defect on the road. Each vehicle gets only one.
Within those 15 days, take the car back to the same station: it rechecks only the items it rejected, for no more than $1, and allows up to 2 reinspections. Go to another station, or come back after the sticker expires, and it's a complete inspection at the full fee. You can have the repairs done anywhere; a car repaired elsewhere just has to be inspected again by an official station. Or ask the inspecting station to do the repairs, which it must make when you request them.
Rejection in short
- Valid: 15 calendar days after issue.
- Same station: $1, failed items only.
- Limit: 2 reinspections by that station.
- Late or elsewhere: full fee, full inspection.

New Residents, New Cars and Exemptions
From the State Police FAQ and Code §§ 46.2-1158.01 and 46.2-1158.1.
Moving to Virginia
There's no grace period. Once the car is registered with DMV it must be inspected immediately; the State Police suggest inspecting before you register.
Bought out of state
You may drive it home uninspected. Once it's registered in Virginia, it must be inspected.
A new car from a dealer
The dealer's pre-delivery inspection counts as the first one. Reinspect within 12 months.
Antique vehicles
Exempt if 25+ years old and registered as an antique, but limited to occasional drives within 250 miles of home.
Other exemptions
Boat, utility or travel trailers without brakes, mopeds, low-speed vehicles, and towed racing vehicles.
Military
A sticker doesn't expire while the car is garaged out of state during official absence. On return, you have 14 days.
Expired Stickers and Penalties
There are no extensions, the State Police say. A car outside Virginia when its sticker expires may be driven by the most direct route back to the owner's Virginia home or business, and with an expired sticker you may drive straight to a station for a booked inspection.
Since 2020, police can't pull you over for the sticker alone: "No law-enforcement officer shall stop a motor vehicle due to an expired vehicle inspection sticker until the first day of the fourth month after the original expiration date." Driving without a valid inspection is a traffic infraction, and each day is a separate offense, but the court may dismiss the summons once you show the car has been fixed or inspected.
The penalty rules
- Extensions: none.
- Stop for the sticker alone: not until month 4 after it expires.
- Offense: a traffic infraction.
- Dismissal: possible once fixed or inspected.
Northern Virginia Emissions Inspection

Virginia State Inspection — Frequently Asked Questions
What Virginia drivers ask most.
Can I get a ticket for an expired inspection sticker in Virginia?+
Police can't stop you for the expired sticker alone until the first day of the fourth month after it expired. Driving without a valid inspection is still a traffic infraction, and the court may dismiss the summons if you show the car was fixed or inspected afterwards.
Is there a grace period for new residents?+
No. The State Police FAQ says once a vehicle is registered with Virginia DMV it must be inspected immediately, and recommends having the inspection done before registering.
Can I get an extension on my Virginia inspection?+
No: "There are no extensions." A vehicle outside Virginia when its sticker expires may be driven by the most direct route back to the owner's home or business in the state.
How do I replace a lost inspection sticker?+
The State Police can replace a lost, stolen or damaged sticker without a reinspection if you show the original receipt issued within the past eleven months. With a valid receipt, replacements are free; a lost or stolen sticker needs a police report first.
Do new cars need an emissions test in Northern Virginia?+
Not at first. A vehicle titled for the first time is treated as having a valid emissions inspection for 4 years from the month of first titling.
Does an emissions pass transfer when I sell my car?+
Yes. A Northern Virginia emissions pass or waiver is valid for two years from the end of the month it was issued, regardless of any sale or trade of the vehicle during that time. The safety inspection sticker, by contrast, can't move to another vehicle.
