Car Accident History UAE — two records, two questions

A crash that happened here is a police record, and it is free to check. Damage from before the car was imported is an American record, reached only through the chassis number. You need both.

Quick Answer

How do you check a car's accident history in the UAE?
For a crash inside the UAE, query the police record free through MOI e-services, Abu Dhabi Police or TAMM — that is the authoritative file. For damage from before the car was imported, use the chassis number to pull the American record, which UAE paperwork never shows. Most imported cars need both checks.

Which record answers your question

“Accident history” is really two separate files that live in two different countries. Confusing them is how buyers get caught.

Police record

Crash happened in the UAE

Filed at the scene by police and attached to the vehicle's traffic file. Free to query through MOI e-services, Abu Dhabi Police or TAMM.

This one is free — we link you to it.
American record

Damage happened before import

US insurer write-offs, title brands and total-loss declarations, all attached to the chassis number and unaffected by a later UAE registration.

This is the half we hold.

The official UAE services, and what each one settles

These are government portals. They are free, they are authoritative for anything that happened on UAE roads, and we have no business charging you for what they already give away.

The clean-file, written-off car

Here is the sequence that costs UAE buyers the most money, and it involves nobody lying to you.

A car is damaged in the United States. The insurer decides the repair would cost more than the car is worth and declares it a total loss, which attaches a salvage brand to the American title. The car goes to auction, sells to an exporter, crosses the water, and is repaired. It is then presented for registration in the UAE, where it is inspected as the vehicle it now is, passes, and receives a mulkiya.

From that day on, the local record is genuinely clean. The car has had no accidents in the UAE, so the police file is empty, and the registration document is entirely accurate about everything it claims. A buyer who checks the local record and stops there sees a perfect history and concludes the car has never been damaged.

The write-off is still there. It did not disappear — it stayed in the American record, attached to the chassis number, where it remains permanently. That is the specific gap this page exists to close, and it is why a local check and a chassis-number check are not substitutes for one another.

Checking both sides, in order

Establish where the car has lived

Decode the chassis number first. The assembly plant and specification tell you whether you are dealing with a car built for the US market, and therefore whether an American record exists at all.

What damage looks like in the American record

Collision damage rarely appears as the word “accident”. It shows up as one of these, and each one is a different severity.

A salvage or junk title brand

The strongest signal available. An insurer looked at the damage and decided the car was not worth repairing.

A total-loss report from an insurer

Recorded with the industry theft and total-loss database even where a title brand was not applied.

A flood designation

Water damage severe enough to be recorded. The consequences surface later as corrosion and electrical faults.

An auction listing

Where the car sold and in what condition. Copart and IAAI lots carry the damage description from the day of sale.

A title moving between states

A brand applied in one state followed by a fresh title in another is the classic shape of title washing.

Warning signs on an imported car

  • The price sits well under comparable cars of the same year and mileage, with no explanation that survives a follow-up question.
  • The seller emphasises the clean UAE record and changes the subject when you ask where the car was before that.
  • Fresh undersealing or new paint on a car whose age does not call for either.
  • The chassis number on the windscreen does not match the door jamb or the mulkiya.
  • You are asked to pay a deposit before you are allowed to run any check at all.

Questions about accident records in the UAE

How do I check a car's accident history in the UAE?

It depends which accident you mean. For a collision that happened inside the UAE, the record sits with the police: use the Ministry of Interior's traffic e-services, Abu Dhabi Police's Accidents' Inquiry, or TAMM if the car is registered in Abu Dhabi. For damage the car sustained before it was imported, the record is American and is reached through the chassis number.

Does a VIN check show accidents that happened in Dubai?

No, and any service that claims otherwise is overstating what it holds. Our data comes from US federal and insurance-industry records. A crash on Sheikh Zayed Road was never filed with an American insurer, so it is not in those records. Use the police portals for that, and use the chassis number for the car's American history.

Why does a car with a clean UAE record still worry me?

Because a clean local record only means nothing has happened since the car was registered here. If the car came from a US auction — Copart or IAAI are the two most common routes — it may have been declared a total loss in the United States, repaired, shipped, and registered locally with a spotless file from day one. The local record is accurate and the car is still a former write-off. Both things are true at once.

Is the MOI accident check free?

Yes. The government portals listed on this page are public services and cost nothing to query. We link to them rather than reselling them, because that is where the authoritative UAE record lives and there is no honest reason to charge you for it.

What does the American record cost?

The decode is free — chassis number in, specification out. The full history report, covering US title brands, open recalls and theft or total-loss reports, is $14.99 in US dollars. There is no subscription.

The seller says the car has never been in an accident. How do I test that?

Ask which country the claim covers, then verify each one separately. Run the police check for the UAE side and the chassis number for the American side. A seller who is confident about both will not object to either. Hesitation about letting you photograph the chassis number is itself the answer.
