When either half comes back branded, this is what the words mean — and what they mean for your money:
Salvage Vehicle Title
Issued when an insurer or owner declares the vehicle a total loss. The bike-shed rule of Texas titles: a Salvage-titled car cannot be operated on public roads until it's rebuilt and re-inspected.
Rebuilt Salvage
Formerly Salvage; the vehicle was repaired and passed a TxDMV Rebuilt Salvage inspection. Legal to drive — and branded for life, following the VIN across all 50 states. Price it accordingly.
Nonrepairable
TxDMV's harshest brand: suitable only for parts or scrap, never to be re-titled for road use. Watch for fraudulent attempts to retitle a Nonrepairable vehicle out of state — it's exactly what the multi-state half exists to catch.
A brand on the Texas record ends the negotiation. A clean Texas record with a brand two states back is the more expensive trap — the paper in the seller's hand looks perfect.
The Gulf Coast problem
Texas floods, and flooded cars get moved.
