Texas car title search? Run both halves.
Texas tracks its titles well — and used cars cross state lines precisely to shed what other states know. The full check has two halves: TxDMV’s official Texas record, and the multi-state NMVTIS file for everywhere the car lived before. Preview the federal half free below.

Quick Answer
- How do I run a car title search in Texas?
- Two halves. The official half: TxDMV's Title Check — Look Before You Buytool on txdmv.gov, plus the state's $5.45 motor-vehicle record for the full Texas paper trail. The other half: the multi-state NMVTIS file— previewed free below for any 17-character VIN — because a used car's past rarely stays in one state.
- What do Texas title brands mean?
- Three matter most: Salvage Vehicle Title(declared a total loss — can't run on Texas roads until rebuilt and re-inspected), Rebuilt Salvage (repaired, passed the TxDMV inspection, branded for life), and Nonrepairable — parts or scrap only, never to be re-titled. The decoder below covers all three.
- Is a Texas title check free?
- Partly. TxDMV's Title Check tool points you at the official routes; the state's full motor-vehicle record costs $5.45. The federal preview here is free per VIN — records found, brand and title flags — and the complete multi-state report is $14.99 only when the car deserves it.

The two halves of a Texas title check
Neither half replaces the other. The state check verifies what Texas knows; the federal file shows what the car did before it got here — and which of the two the seller is quieter about is usually your answer:

TxDMV Title Check
The state's official “Look Before You Buy” route on txdmv.gov — Texas's own title status for the VIN, from the agency that issued the paper.
The $5.45 Texas record
The full state motor-vehicle record — Texas title history, brands and status — for a $5.45 fee, without a trip to a TxDMV regional service center.
The federal half
The NMVTIS multi-state file: title events and brands from all reporting states. Preview it free here; the complete report is $14.99 when records exist.
Texas title brands, decoded
When either half comes back branded, this is what the words mean — and what they mean for your money:
Salvage Vehicle Title
Issued when an insurer or owner declares the vehicle a total loss. The bike-shed rule of Texas titles: a Salvage-titled car cannot be operated on public roads until it's rebuilt and re-inspected.
Rebuilt Salvage
Formerly Salvage; the vehicle was repaired and passed a TxDMV Rebuilt Salvage inspection. Legal to drive — and branded for life, following the VIN across all 50 states. Price it accordingly.
Nonrepairable
TxDMV's harshest brand: suitable only for parts or scrap, never to be re-titled for road use. Watch for fraudulent attempts to retitle a Nonrepairable vehicle out of state — it's exactly what the multi-state half exists to catch.
A brand on the Texas record ends the negotiation. A clean Texas record with a brand two states back is the more expensive trap — the paper in the seller's hand looks perfect.
The Gulf Coast problem
Texas floods, and flooded cars get moved. After every major storm, water-damaged vehicles are dried, detailed and re-sold — often re-titled along the way, sometimes out of state where the flood brand doesn't follow the paper. The federal file carries the flood and salvage declarations from every reporting state, which is why the multi-state half matters more in Texas than almost anywhere: a Houston flood car with a clean out-of-state title is a solved puzzle when both halves are on the table.
Three steps, standing in the seller’s driveway
The whole check takes minutes, and the expensive half is optional until it isn’t.
Read the VIN off the car
Dashboard through the windshield, driver-door jamb — and match it against the title in the seller's hand. Never type a VIN from the listing.

What each route shows — honestly
All three have a job. Here’s the split:
| Route | What it covers | What it can’t show |
|---|---|---|
| TxDMV Title Check (official) | Texas title status for the VIN, from the state itself | Nothing from the other 49 states — and that's where shed pasts hide |
| Texas motor-vehicle record ($5.45) | The full Texas paper trail: title history, brands, status | Still one state's view — a car that arrived last year has one line here |
| Full NMVTIS report ($14.99, preview free) | Title events and brands from all reporting states, ownership timeline, salvage and flood declarations | Thin-history vehicles can return limited records — the free preview shows what exists before you pay |
The money-saving order: free preview first, TxDMV's free tool alongside, and paid records only for the car you're actually about to buy.

Texas title searches — what buyers ask
Including the answers where the state’s free tool is the right call.
How do I check a title status in Texas?+
Start with TxDMV's official Title Check tool — the state's 'Look Before You Buy' route — and the free federal preview here for the multi-state half. For the complete Texas paper trail, the state sells its full motor-vehicle record for $5.45. The complete multi-state file, with title events and brands from all reporting states, is $14.99 with the preview free first.
Is there a completely free Texas title check?+
Two genuinely free layers exist: TxDMV's Title Check tool for the state's status, and the federal preview here — records found and brand flags for any 17-character VIN, no card, no account. The paid layers are the state's $5.45 full record and the $14.99 multi-state report, and the honest advice is to spend on those only for the car you're about to buy.
What does a Nonrepairable title mean in Texas?+
It's TxDMV's harshest brand: the vehicle is suitable only for parts or scrap and can never be re-titled for road use in Texas. If a car you're being sold traces back to a Nonrepairable record — especially one that was re-titled in another state afterward — walk away and consider reporting it; that pattern is title fraud, not a bargain.
Can I drive a Rebuilt Salvage car in Texas?+
Yes — Rebuilt Salvage means the vehicle was repaired after a salvage declaration and passed the TxDMV Rebuilt Salvage inspection. It's road-legal, insurable with some shopping around, and permanently branded: the Rebuilt brand follows the VIN for life across all 50 states, which is why a rebuilt car should always be priced well below a clean-title twin.
The car just moved to Texas from another state — what should I check?+
Exactly the case the two halves exist for. The Texas record will be nearly empty — one recent title line — so the multi-state file does the real work: what brands, salvage declarations or flood records the car carried in its previous states. A clean, freshly issued Texas title on a recently imported car proves very little by itself.
How do I spot a flood car in Texas?+
Paper first, nose second. The federal file carries flood and salvage declarations from every reporting state — including cars that were flooded elsewhere and moved to Texas, or flooded here and re-titled away. If the records are clean, then do the physical checks: carpet lines, silt in seat rails, fogged lamps. Paper plus inspection catches what either misses alone.
I'm comparing several listings — what's the cheapest way to check them all?+
Free previews on every candidate, TxDMV's free tool alongside, and bundles for the finalists: three full reports for $35.99, five for $54.99, ten for $89.99 — $9.00 each at the top pack, with credits that sit on your account until you spend them.
Check the VIN before the handshake.
The federal preview is free on any VIN — title records, brand flags, history counts. The full multi-state file is $14.99 when the car earns it.
