What it cannot tell you is what happened after the sale: whether a state branded the title, whether the car passed a rebuilt inspection, how many times it changed hands. Those are title records, which the US Department of Justice says reach the federal NMVTIS system when an insurer declares a total loss or a state brands the title.
Why a Car's Poctra Record Can Disappear
Search for Poctra and the results include companies offering to remove cars from it. Carfast Express advertises that it will delete VIN history and hide photos from Google for cars listed on Poctra, and HideAutoVin offers the same.
For a buyer, that changes how to read an empty result. No archive record may mean the car was never sold as salvage. It may also mean someone paid to remove it. The title record and the insurance total-loss record are not archive pages, and they are the check that does not depend on a website keeping its photos.
