Who Runs It: the VinAudit Connection
The Department of Justice publishes the list of companies approved to sell NMVTIS reports to consumers. On our last read of that page, 2026-09-12, it listed 12 approved providers and noted several websites owned by them. VinCheck.Info is recorded as one of the sites owned by Vinaudit.com.
That matches what VinCheck.info says about itself: its homepage names NMVTIS-related reporting, VinAudit, NHTSA and FMCSA as data sources. In practice it is a free front door to a provider that is approved to sell the federal title record, which is a reasonable answer to “is it legit”.
VinCheck.info Is Not the NICB's VINCheck
Search for “vincheck” and two different things come up. The National Insurance Crime Bureau's VINCheck is a free tool that checks a VIN against salvage, flood and theft records reported by participating insurers. It is the NICB's own tool, and it is free to use.

What a Free Lookup Can and Cannot Tell You
A free lookup is good at public and decoded data: the specification behind the VIN, open recalls, safety ratings. Those come from the manufacturer and from government sources that anyone can query, which is why many sites give them away.
Title history is different. Brands, total losses and salvage records come from NMVTIS and from insurers, and access to NMVTIS is sold by approved providers. That is why free sites tend to offer a paid title report on top of the free lookup, and why the useful question is not whether a lookup is free but which records it actually returns.
