What a VIN Decode Shows, and What It Can't
The 17 characters are a code, not a history. The first three identify the manufacturer, the next five describe the vehicle, the ninth is a check digit, the tenth is the model year, the eleventh the plant, and the last six a serial number.
None of those characters change when a car floods, is written off or has its odometer rolled back. Those events are recorded elsewhere: in state title records, insurer reports and auction listings.
