Are the free sites that promise full reports real?+
Generally not. A genuinely free full history report on any VIN you choose does not exist as a product. What exists is free federal lookups, and seller-paid reports attached to listings.
Can I read a report the dealer paid for?+
Yes, and it costs you nothing. Just note the date it was run — anything can be filed against the car after it.
Is free enough for a cheap car?+
Sometimes. On a very cheap car the free checks plus a careful inspection may be a defensible risk. The problem is that a title brand costs exactly as much to discover late on a cheap car as on an expensive one.
Does a free check tell me about accidents?+
Only indirectly. A total-loss record filed by a member insurer may appear at NICB, but ordinary collision repairs will not.
