Quick Answer

Is Vinfax affiliated with CARFAX?
No, by its own terms. Section 2 says Vinfax "is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or officially connected with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian", any carmaker, dealer, insurer or government agency, and that it uses those names only to identify the reports.
How much does Vinfax cost?
$4.99 for one CARFAX or AutoCheck report, with a $0.99 offer advertised to new customers. Credit packs run from 6 credits for $25.00 to 950 for $950.00, which is $1.00 a report. Auction history reports are free.
Is Vinfax a subscription?
Its terms say purchases are one-time transactions, not recurring subscriptions, unless the checkout or package page says otherwise. They also say delivered reports are generally final, and credits spent on a wrong VIN or plate are generally not refundable.

  3. 3Know what kind of report it isA CARFAX report is not an NMVTIS report. Federal title data is sold through approved providers.

What Vinfax Sells

Vinfax.com takes a VIN, or a US license plate and state, and shows which reports it can produce: CARFAX, AutoCheck and an auction history report. Its home page prices the CARFAX and AutoCheck reports at $4.99 each, lists the auction history report as free, and carries an "Exclusive $0.99 Offer for New Customers" banner. The search box has a phone-camera VIN scanner built in.

The page title promises "90% Off Official Reports". Against the $44.99 that other report sellers quote for a single Carfax report, $4.99 is about 89% less. The page does not say where Vinfax obtains the reports; its terms say report content "may be sourced from third-party providers".

Before you pay Vinfax

  • The $0.99 offer: its conditions were not on the page when we read it.
  • The source: not named; its terms say data may come from third-party providers.
  • Refunds: delivered reports are generally final.
  • Not NMVTIS-approved: not on the Justice Department's consumer list.

Vinfax Credit Packs, Priced Per Report

One credit buys one vehicle report. Its packages page says credits never expire and each pack is a one-time purchase.

What Vinfax's Terms Say

Vinfax's terms were last updated July 16, 2026. They describe a lookup and report-delivery service that is independent of CARFAX, AutoCheck and Experian, whose report data may come from third-party providers, and which does not promise that the information is complete or current.

On money, the terms say purchases are one-time and not subscriptions, delivered reports are generally final, and credits spent on incorrect inputs are generally not refundable unless the law requires it or Vinfax caused a verified technical failure. Disputes go to the courts of Moldova, under Moldovan law.

Who Stands Behind a Reseller Report

When you buy from Vinfax, your contract is with Vinfax. Its terms cap its liability at what you paid for the transaction, say it does not create or independently verify all the vehicle data it shows, and tell you not to rely on a report as the only basis for a purchase. CARFAX is not a party to the sale, on Vinfax's own description.

That matters when something goes wrong: a report for the wrong car, a report that never generates, or a record you think should be there and isn't. The terms also forbid copying, republishing or reselling the reports you buy, so the report is for your own use only.

Is a CARFAX Report an NMVTIS Report?

No. NMVTIS is the federal title database that state titling agencies, insurers and junk and salvage yards report into, and the Justice Department publishes which companies may sell its reports to consumers. Its page says: "Consumers CANNOT receive NMVTIS Vehicle History Reports from Carfax, DMVDesk, or Experian; these entities provide information only to car dealerships."

Vinfax does not appear on the Justice Department's list of the 12 companies approved to sell NMVTIS reports to consumers. The list does not grade anyone's reports. It tells you which sellers can give you the federal title, brand and odometer history directly.

When a Cheap CARFAX Report Makes Sense

If a dealer is selling the car, ask for the CARFAX or AutoCheck report on its listing before buying one yourself. Dealers buy those reports on their own accounts, and some put them on the listing for free.

If you are shortlisting several private-sale cars, the per-report cost adds up, and a pack can be cheaper. Before buying credits from anyone, read the refund terms against the mistakes you are most likely to make: a mistyped VIN, a plate from the wrong state, or a car you stop wanting after the first report.
