VIN Inspection Colorado — State Patrol Requirements & Process.

Colorado requires a State Patrol VIN inspection (verification) in these situations: (1) titling an out-of-state vehicle in Colorado — the most common trigger, applies whenever you move to Colorado or buy a vehicle titled in another state; (2) titling a salvage vehicle as rebuilt after repair; (3) registering a homemade or significantly reconstructed trailer; (4) reconstructed vehicles built from multiple donor vehicles, kit cars, or replica builds; (5) vehicles imported from foreign countries (Canada, Mexico, or elsewhere); (6) any case where the factory VIN plate is damaged, illegible, or missing. In-state private-party sales of Colorado-titled vehicles between individuals usually do NOT require a State Patrol inspection — those transfers happen at the county DMV clerk's office without a physical VIN verification. The standard Colorado State Patrol VIN verification fee is $20, payable at the time of inspection. Most CSP offices accept cash or check; some also accept card. Wait times can be longer during busy periods, especially at Denver metro and Colorado Springs offices — plan for 1 to 2 hours total on-site. Salvage and rebuilt vehicle inspections take longer — typically 45 minutes to an hour or more — because the trooper verifies documentation for major components (engine, transmission, airbags, structural repairs) beyond just the VIN. Homemade trailer inspections that result in a Colorado Assigned Identification Number can take 1 to 2 hours because a plate must be manufactured and installed.

For a standard VIN verification: the vehicle itself (they need to physically inspect it), the current title (or Manufacturer's Statement of Origin for new/reconstructed vehicles), a valid photo ID (Colorado driver's license or other government-issued ID), and $20 cash or check for the fee.
