What VinPit Says It Offers
VinPit's LinkedIn page says it helps run checks on a vehicle you want to buy, informing you of its specs, accident and theft history. A 2023 press release distributed through Send2Press by VinPit Inc. announced an enhanced free VIN number look-up and license plate lookup.
Its website returned an error to every request from our network, so we could not read its current pages, prices or report samples. Search interest in VinPit has also fallen sharply over the past year, which is worth knowing before relying on any site.

- Vinpit wines is an unrelated natural-wine seller that shares the name.
- VinCheck.info is a different free lookup site, owned by VinAudit per the DOJ.
- NICB VINCheck is the insurance industry's free theft and salvage check.
A Free Lookup vs a Title Report
Free VIN tools are good at one job: decoding the VIN into the car's specification. That catches a listing that claims the wrong trim, engine or year.
What they usually cannot give away is title data. The Justice Department limits consumer sales of NMVTIS data to approved providers, and those records are where salvage, flood and junk brands and insurance total losses appear.
