How a Genesis VIN breaks down
Genesis is Hyundai Motor's luxury division, and its VINs are issued under Hyundai's manufacturer codes following the 17-character ISO 3779 standard. Genesis models such as the G70, G80 and G90 sedans are built in South Korea, so their VINs begin with a Korea-assigned World Manufacturer Identifier. The GV70 and GV80 SUVs are also Korea-built, with select electrified GV70 production added in the USA.
Positions 4–8 encode the model line, body and engine; position 9 is the check digit; position 10 the model year; position 11 the plant; and 12–17 the sequential build number. Because Genesis launched as a standalone brand in 2017, every Genesis-badged vehicle uses the full 17-character format.
Decode vs. history: what the VIN can and can't tell you
Decoding a Genesis VIN reveals the factory build — year, engine, plant and trim. It won't show what happened after the sale. For salvage, accident, flood and odometer brands, run the same VIN through a history report drawing on NMVTIS and state-DMV records.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the VIN on a Genesis?
On the lower-left corner of the windshield, the driver-side doorjamb sticker, and the title and registration.
Is a Genesis VIN decoded like a Hyundai VIN?
Yes. Genesis is Hyundai's luxury brand and its VINs are issued under Hyundai Motor codes, so the 17-character structure reads the same way.
Where are Genesis vehicles built?
The G70, G80, G90, GV70 and GV80 are built in South Korea, with select electrified GV70 production in the USA. The VIN's WMI and plant code reflect the assembly origin.
