What a BMW Window Sticker Tells You
On a used BMW the sticker is the one place that lists every option the car left the factory with and what each cost, which matters on a brand where two cars of the same model can differ widely in equipment. It also names the dealer the car was first delivered to.
EPA's 2026 file has BMWs in four powertrain types, from gasoline M cars at 18–19 MPG to the electric iX at 75–97 MPGe. Many gasoline BMWs carry EPA's hybrid classification, which the table prints as EPA does.
Gaps in a BMW window sticker
- Accident records: none; it's a new-car document.
- Ownership: it names a dealer, not owners.
- Title history: check it separately, by VIN.
- Later parts: anything added after delivery is missing.

Where to Get a BMW Window Sticker Now
MonroneyLabels.com lists VIN-specific BMW data from the 2002 model year, at $9.99 a sticker. VIN Analytics lists BMW among its brands, at $9.99, and says it supplies the factory original label when it has it and a replica built from the VIN when it doesn't. A car built for sale outside the US usually has no US sticker on file at either.
With the paperwork in hand, a free replica does the job for a sale listing: the VIN fills the decoder fields and you add the BMW's prices.
BMW VIN Prefixes (WMI)
The first three characters of a VIN are its World Manufacturer Identifier. These are 7 of the identifiers NHTSA lists for BMW cars, SUVs and trucks.
| WMI | Manufacturer, as NHTSA lists it | Country | Vehicle type |
|---|---|---|---|
| WBA | BMW AG | Germany | Passenger car |
| WBS | BMW M GMBH | Germany | Passenger car |
| WBY | BMW AG | Germany | Passenger car |
| 4US | BMW MANUFACTURER CORPORATION / BMW NORTH AMERICA | United States | Passenger car |
| WBX | BMW AG | Germany | MPV (SUV, crossover) |
| 5UX | BMW MANUFACTURER CORPORATION / BMW NORTH AMERICA | United States | MPV (SUV, crossover) |
| 5YM | BMW MANUFACTURER CORPORATION / BMW NORTH AMERICA | United States | MPV (SUV, crossover) |
NHTSA vPIC, read 23 October 2026. The country is NHTSA's entry for the manufacturer; the sticker's final assembly point names the plant for a specific car.
What Federal Law Puts on the Sticker
Every new BMW sold in the US carries a sticker because of 15 U.S.C. § 1232, passed in 1958. The carmaker must list the VIN, the final assembly point, the dealer receiving the car, the suggested retail price, every option's price, transport and the total, plus NHTSA's crash ratings or a statement that the car hasn't been rated. Section 1233 makes removing or altering it before delivery an offense: up to $1,000 and a year in jail for each car. After delivery the rule stops, and most used cars lose theirs.

NHTSA lists WBA, WBY and WBX under BMW AG and WBS under BMW M GmbH, all in Germany, and 4US, 5UX and 5YM under BMW Manufacturer Corporation / BMW North America in the United States.
The prefix says which company entry built the car. The window sticker's final assembly point names the plant, which settles it for one particular BMW.

Where These Facts Come From
The label rules come from the US Code, the ratings from EPA, the VIN prefixes from NHTSA, and the sellers' coverage from their own pages.
Read on 23 October 2026. EPA adds versions to a model year as they are rated, and sellers change coverage, so check both before relying on a figure. CarCheckerVIN is not affiliated with BMW, MonroneyLabels.com or VIN Analytics.
