VIN Numbers Starting With S — Built in the United Kingdom

The letter S is allotted across four countries. SA through SM is the United Kingdom. SN through ST is Germany — a second German range, opened when W filled up. SU through SZ is Poland, and S1 through S4 is Latvia.

This is the clearest illustration of why the first character alone is an unreliable country test. A decoder that maps S to "United Kingdom" will label German and Polish production as British, and it will do so silently.

The correct rule is to read the allotment as a range and match both characters. In practice, for cars in the North American market, SA–SM is what you will meet, because British luxury exports are a substantial presence and Polish and second-range German production largely is not.

There are two entirely different populations of British-built cars in the US, and they call for different levels of caution. The first is manufacturer-imported: Jaguars, Land Rovers, Bentleys, Rolls-Royces and Aston Martins federalised and sold new by franchised dealers. These are ordinary US-titled vehicles with ordinary US records.

The second is the private import — usually right-hand drive, usually brought in under the 25-year FMVSS exemption. Here the title record is the whole story: which state issued it, against what VIN format, and whether any brand was applied at entry.

There is a third thing worth checking on any low-volume British car, imported or not: whether the specific vehicle has an open recall or an unresolved lien. Low production volumes mean parts and service history can be thin, and a report that reads title brands, theft records and recall status against the VIN is the cheapest form of diligence available before a large cheque.
