Tesla's plant is the clearest signal in the VIN: 5YJ for Fremont, 7SA for Austin, LRW for Shanghai and XP7 for Berlin. Positions 4–8 encode the model line, body type, restraint system and (in Tesla's scheme) drive configuration; position 7 commonly differentiates the motor/drive layout. Position 9 is the check digit, position 10 the model year and position 11 the plant code.
