Alberta VIN Check — Instant Cross-Province Vehicle History.

Alberta requires a mandatory out-of-province inspection before a vehicle from another province or the US can be registered — but that inspection checks safety, not title history. A branded car can still pass the safety inspection while hiding its salvage past, which is exactly what a VIN history report surfaces.

Alberta pulls used inventory from BC, Saskatchewan and heavily from the US, and its out-of-province inspection catches unsafe cars but not washed brands. A US salvage or flood title erased by a fresh Alberta registration only surfaces through a VIN cross-check against US NMVTIS.

That's the whole reason a province-level record and a VIN history report do different jobs. The Alberta title / registry search confirms what happened inside Alberta; the VIN report reconstructs the vehicle across every jurisdiction it was ever registered in — plus the US NMVTIS database for imports.

The first three characters — the World Manufacturer Identifier or WMI — tell you the country, the manufacturer and the vehicle class. Canadian-built cars start with 2; US-built cars start with 1, 4 or 5; Mexican-built with 3; German with W; Japanese with J; Korean with K. Alberta roads carry vehicles from every one of these origins.

Characters four through eight describe the model line, body style, restraint system and engine. The ninth is a check digit calculated from the others; the tenth encodes the model year; the eleventh is the assembly-plant code. A mismatch on the check digit or plant code is a strong signal the VIN has been altered.

Characters twelve through seventeen are the unique production serial. The VIN check ties it all together in plain language — year, model, trim, engine, drivetrain and plant — with the Alberta Registries title chain and national history sitting on top.

Every modern vehicle prints the VIN in at least five places, and Alberta adds it to your Alberta title / registry searchand registration documents. Any one works for a VIN check — but if they disagree, that mismatch is a strong signal the car's identity has been tampered with.

The fastest is the lower corner of the windshield on the driver's side — look through the glass from outside. The driver-side door-jamb sticker is second-easiest and also lists the tire-pressure spec and manufacture date. The Alberta title / registry search and the insurance documents both print the VIN.

On older vehicles the VIN may also be stamped on the firewall under the hood or on the frame. Use the door-jamb number when you copy the VIN for a check — it's the hardest to swap and the easiest to read.

The Out-of-Province Vehicle Inspection (OOPVI) is required to register an imported or interprovincial vehicle in Alberta and to convert a salvage car to Rebuilt status. It is a safety and structural check — it explicitly does not verify where the vehicle was previously branded or written off.

Alberta consistently posts one of Canada's highest per-capita theft rates, concentrated in Edmonton and Calgary. Older trucks left running to warm up in winter ("puffing") are a recurring target.

That's why the order matters: run the VIN check first to see the national title chain, then use a full VIN history report and a hands-on mechanic inspection to confirm the car is what the paperwork says. An inspection proves current condition; the VIN report proves the past.
