British Columbia VIN Check — Instant Cross-Province Vehicle History.

Because ICBC is both the insurer and the registry, its status designations (Salvage, Rebuilt, Non-repairable) are unusually reliable within BC — but they still can't see a brand a car carried in Alberta or the US before it arrived. The VIN check closes that cross-border gap.

BC's Pacific ports and the Washington State border make it a common first landing point for US-titled and grey-market imports. A US salvage or flood brand can disappear the moment ICBC issues a fresh BC registration, so a VIN cross-check against US NMVTIS is the only way to see the washed brand.

That's the whole reason a province-level record and a VIN history report do different jobs. The first three characters — the World Manufacturer Identifier or WMI — tell you the country, the manufacturer and the vehicle class. Canadian-built cars start with 2; US-built cars start with 1, 4 or 5; Mexican-built with 3; German with W; Japanese with J; Korean with K. British Columbia roads carry vehicles from every one of these origins.

Characters four through eight describe the model line, body style, restraint system and engine. The ninth is a check digit calculated from the others; the tenth encodes the model year; the eleventh is the assembly-plant code. A mismatch on the check digit or plant code is a strong signal the VIN has been altered.

Characters twelve through seventeen are the unique production serial. The VIN check ties it all together in plain language — year, model, trim, engine, drivetrain and plant — with the ICBC title chain and national history sitting on top.

Every modern vehicle prints the VIN in at least five places, and British Columbia adds it to your ICBC vehicle claims history / statusand registration documents. Any one works for a VIN check — but if they disagree, that mismatch is a strong signal the car's identity has been tampered with.

The fastest is the lower corner of the windshield on the driver's side — look through the glass from outside. The driver-side door-jamb sticker is second-easiest and also lists the tire-pressure spec and manufacture date. On older vehicles the VIN may also be stamped on the firewall under the hood or on the frame. Use the door-jamb number when you copy the VIN for a check — it's the hardest to swap and the easiest to read.

A salvage vehicle in BC must pass a designated inspection facility rebuild inspection before ICBC will re-register it as Rebuilt. That inspection verifies the repair quality and roadworthiness — it does not audit the vehicle's out-of-province or US title history.

BC's proximity to the US border makes it a common landing point for US-titled imports whose salvage or flood brands can disappear on a fresh provincial title. Metro Vancouver sees the province's highest theft concentration.

That's why the order matters: run the VIN check first to see the national title chain, then use a full VIN history report and a hands-on mechanic inspection to confirm the car is what the paperwork says. An inspection proves current condition; the VIN report proves the past.
