Prince Edward Island VIN Check — Instant Cross-Province Vehicle History.

As Canada's smallest province, PEI's used-car pool is almost entirely fed from the mainland Maritimes over the Confederation Bridge — so an Access PEI title rarely reflects where the car was actually damaged or written off. A VIN report fills in the off-island history.

PEI inventory flows in over the Confederation Bridge from the mainland Maritimes, and some cars trace back to US imports through New Brunswick's Maine border. A brand applied off-island is invisible on the PEI title and only recoverable through a VIN cross-check against every province and US NMVTIS.

That's the whole reason a province-level record and a VIN history report do different jobs. The Access PEI title record confirms what happened inside Prince Edward Island; the VIN report reconstructs the vehicle across every jurisdiction it was ever registered in — plus the US NMVTIS database for imports.

The first three characters — the World Manufacturer Identifier or WMI — tell you the country, the manufacturer and the vehicle class. Canadian-built cars start with 2; US-built cars start with 1, 4 or 5; Mexican-built with 3; German with W; Japanese with J; Korean with K. Prince Edward Island roads carry vehicles from every one of these origins.

Characters four through eight describe the model line, body style, restraint system and engine. The ninth is a check digit calculated from the others; the tenth encodes the model year; the eleventh is the assembly-plant code. A mismatch on the check digit or plant code is a strong signal the VIN has been altered.

Characters twelve through seventeen are the unique production serial. The VIN check ties it all together in plain language — year, model, trim, engine, drivetrain and plant — with the Access PEI title chain and national history sitting on top.

Every modern vehicle prints the VIN in at least five places, and Prince Edward Island adds it to your Access PEI title recordand registration documents. Any one works for a VIN check — but if they disagree, that mismatch is a strong signal the car's identity has been tampered with.

The fastest is the lower corner of the windshield on the driver's side — look through the glass from outside. The driver-side door-jamb sticker is second-easiest and also lists the tire-pressure spec and manufacture date. The Access PEI title record and the insurance documents both print the VIN.

On older vehicles the VIN may also be stamped on the firewall under the hood or on the frame. Use the door-jamb number when you copy the VIN for a check — it's the hardest to swap and the easiest to read.

PEI requires a motor-vehicle safety inspection to register and plate a used car. The inspection certifies current roadworthiness — it does not establish where the car was previously titled or whether it carried a salvage brand before crossing to the island.

PEI's small market means used inventory turns over across the Confederation Bridge from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia; theft is low but title-washed imports still appear.

That's why the order matters: run the VIN check first to see the national title chain, then use a full VIN history report and a hands-on mechanic inspection to confirm the car is what the paperwork says. An inspection proves current condition; the VIN report proves the past.
