Quebec VIN Check — Instant Cross-Province Vehicle History.

Quebec runs its own vehicle-status classifications through the SAAQ ("gravement accidenté", "irréparable") that don't map one-to-one onto the English salvage/rebuilt brands used elsewhere in Canada. A bilingual VIN report normalises them so an out-of-province buyer isn't misled by the terminology.

Quebec sits on the New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine borders and is a major entry point for US used cars. Because SAAQ statuses are recorded in French and US brands are recorded in English, a title-washed import can slip through unless the VIN is cross-checked against US NMVTIS and the brands normalised.

That's the whole reason a province-level record and a VIN history report do different jobs. The SAAQ registration certificate confirms what happened inside Quebec; the VIN report reconstructs the vehicle across every jurisdiction it was ever registered in — plus the US NMVTIS database for imports.

The first three characters — the World Manufacturer Identifier or WMI — tell you the country, the manufacturer and the vehicle class. Characters twelve through seventeen are the unique production serial. The VIN check ties it all together in plain language — year, model, trim, engine, drivetrain and plant — with the SAAQ title chain and national history sitting on top.

Every modern vehicle prints the VIN in at least five places, and Quebec adds it to your SAAQ registration certificateand registration documents. Any one works for a VIN check — but if they disagree, that mismatch is a strong signal the car's identity has been tampered with.

The fastest is the lower corner of the windshield on the driver's side — look through the glass from outside. The driver-side door-jamb sticker is second-easiest and also lists the tire-pressure spec and manufacture date. The SAAQ registration certificate and the insurance documents both print the VIN.

On older vehicles the VIN may also be stamped on the firewall under the hood or on the frame. Use the door-jamb number when you copy the VIN for a check — it's the hardest to swap and the easiest to read.

A vehicle recorded as "gravement accidenté" cannot be put back on the road in Quebec without a mandatory SAAQ mechanical and technical inspection. That inspection confirms the rebuild is safe — it does not reveal an out-of-province or US brand the car carried before it reached Quebec.

The Port of Montreal is the primary exit point for vehicles stolen across Ontario and Quebec and shipped overseas in containers. Quebec's own theft rate is driven by keyless-entry relay attacks on late-model SUVs.

That's why the order matters: run the VIN check first to see the national title chain, then use a full VIN history report and a hands-on mechanic inspection to confirm the car is what the paperwork says. An inspection proves current condition; the VIN report proves the past.
