Why a classic VIN decodes differently

The 17-character VIN did not exist yet

From the 1965 model year through 1980, Ford used a compact 11-character VIN. Read left to right it names the model year, the assembly plant, the body serial code (which encodes the model line and body style), the engine code, and the six-digit sequential unit number. What makes Ford unique among the American muscle-era manufacturers is that the original factory production data still exists — Kevin Marti of Marti Auto Works holds a license from Ford Motor Company to sell per-VIN Marti Reports that pull the actual dealer-invoiced options, paint code, DSO region, and production date for any 1967 or later Ford. For pre-1967 Fords the same information is reconstructed from the door tag and the archival records held by Ford model registries. Pos 6-11: Starts at 100001 each model year at each plant. Sequential per plant, not per model. Two different Ford lines built at Dearborn will share sequence numbers with each other, not with San Jose.

Notes: The VIN engine code (position 5) is the single fastest way to authenticate a claimed muscle Mustang. A real K-code HiPo 289 stamps with a K; a real 428 Cobra Jet stamps with an R; a real Boss 302 stamps with a G; a real Boss 429 stamps with a Z. A car re-lettered with the wrong code (or without the door-jamb warranty tag confirming the same code) is telling you it is a tribute, not the real thing. Cross-check the VIN engine code against the door-jamb data plate, the block casting date, and the Marti Report before treating any claim as authoritative.

Notes: 1973 is the last year of the 351 Cobra Jet and the first-gen Mustang. From 1974 the downsized Mustang II arrives and shares its VIN body codes with the Pinto (they are the same platform). By 1979 the Fox-body Mustang launches, but keeps the same 11-character VIN structure through 1980 before switching to the mandatory 17-character format for MY 1981.

What the position tables don't tell you

The engine code is one letter, and it decides the value

On a 1969 or 1970 Mustang, position 5 of the VIN is the single character that separates a genuine Boss 302 (G) from a base 302 (F), a real 428 Cobra Jet (R or Q) from a 390 GT (S), or a Boss 429 (Z) from anything else. That letter is stamped into the VIN plate at the plant — it cannot be legally re-stamped. A car whose VIN engine code disagrees with the block casting or the door-jamb warranty tag is a tribute or a re-tag, not the original combination.

The door-jamb warranty tag is the second reference

Ford stamped a metal warranty tag on the driver-side door jamb (through 1969) or driver-side door edge (1970-onward) that carries the VIN, body code, color code, trim code, axle code, transmission code, and DSO (District Sales Office) region. That tag is your cross-check against the VIN engine code and, for post-1967 cars, against the Marti Report data. A missing or replaced door-jamb tag is not fatal — it is common on restored cars — but it drops the confidence level and the value.

Buy the Marti Report before you buy the car

For any 1967-and-newer Ford where the seller is asking Boss / Cobra Jet / Shelby / King Cobra money, a $60 Marti Deluxe Report against the VIN before you fly out to inspect is the single best-return-per-dollar due-diligence step on a classic Ford purchase. The report tells you the factory-issued options, the paint code, the exact production date, and the DSO — any discrepancy against the car in front of you is a conversation with the seller before the deposit clears, not after.

1965-1966First-year Mustang and K-code HiPo

Original Mustang hardtop, convertible, and 2+2 fastback. K-code 289 HiPo is the top drivetrain until the GT-350 arrives. Shelby GT350 1965-66 built at the S-code Allen Park pilot plant.

1967-1969Big-block muscle era

Mustang restyled for 1967 to fit big-block V8s. 390 GT, 428 Cobra Jet, 428 Super Cobra Jet arrive. Shelby GT500 with 428 Police Interceptor and later 428 CJ. 1969 introduces the Boss 302 and Boss 429.

1970-1971Peak Mustang and Torino

Last year of the Boss 302 (1970), only year of the Boss 351 (1971), only year of the 429 Super Cobra Jet in the Torino platform. 1971 is the largest first-gen Mustang.

1972-1973Compression drops, last of the big blocks

Compression ratios cut for unleaded fuel. 1973 is the last first-gen Mustang, the last 351 Cobra Jet, and the last Ford convertible until 1983.

1974-1978Mustang II and downsizing

Mustang II shares the Pinto platform. Cobra II package (1976-78) and King Cobra (1978) are the performance nameplates. Ghia trim brings the T-tops.

1979-1980Fox-body launch

Fox-body Mustang launches for 1979 with 302 2V or 2.3L turbo. The 11-char VIN carries through 1980 before the switch to 17 characters for the 1981 model year.

How do I decode a classic Ford VIN from the 1960s or 1970s?

Read the 11-character VIN one position at a time. Position 1 is the last digit of the model year. Position 2 is the assembly plant letter (F=Dearborn, R=San Jose, T=Metuchen, U=Louisville, etc.). Positions 3-4 are the body serial code that names the model and body style (07=Mustang hardtop, 09=Mustang fastback, 63=Torino GT SportsRoof, 76=Galaxie convertible). Position 5 is the engine code letter — the single character that separates a Boss 302 from a base 302 or a Cobra Jet from a 390 GT. Positions 6-11 are the sequential unit number at that plant for that year.

Where is the VIN on a classic Ford Mustang?

Through 1967 the VIN was stamped on a metal plate riveted to the driver-side inner fender apron on the left front of the engine bay. From 1968 forward federal law required the VIN to be visible through the driver-side windshield, and Ford also stamped it into a warranty tag on the driver-side door jamb (through 1969) or the door edge (from 1970). On a properly documented car all three locations agree.

Can NHTSA decode a 1969 Mustang or 1970 Boss 302 VIN?

No. The NHTSA vPIC decoder only supports 17-character VINs, mandated for the 1981 model year and later. A 1969 Mustang carries an 11-character VIN and returns no data from vPIC. To decode it you use the Ford position tables (above), the door-jamb warranty tag, and — for 1967 and newer — the Marti Report which pulls the actual factory production record.

What is a Marti Report and when do I need one?

Kevin Marti of Marti Auto Works holds a license from Ford Motor Company to sell per-VIN reports pulled from the original Ford production database, covering 1967 through 2012 Fords, Mercurys, and Lincolns. The report lists the factory-invoiced options, paint code, trim code, DSO region, engine and transmission codes, and production date. On any 1967-newer Ford where the seller is asking muscle-car money, a $60 Deluxe Marti Report is the standard-of-care due diligence step before wiring a deposit. On any claimed Boss 302, Boss 429, Cobra Jet, Mach 1, Shelby, or King Cobra, the $250 Elite Marti Report with the color print and the frame-able certificate is what auction houses and insurance appraisers expect to see.

How do I authenticate a Boss 302, Boss 429, or Cobra Jet Mustang?

Four references in agreement. First, the VIN engine code (position 5) must match: G=Boss 302, Z=Boss 429, R=428 CJ (with ram-air), Q=428 SCJ. Second, the door-jamb warranty tag must match the VIN and carry the correct body code (63A/B/C/D/R for the various SportsRoof and Mach 1 configurations). Third, the block casting date must precede the car's build date by no more than about 90 days. Fourth, the Marti Report from Ford's production archive must confirm the drivetrain and DSO. All four in agreement is standard-of-care. Three of four is a conversation with the seller.

What is the difference between a Dearborn, San Jose, and Metuchen Mustang?

Same car, different plant. Dearborn (position 2 = F) built the largest volume of first-gen Mustangs. San Jose (R) served West Coast delivery. Metuchen (T) built East Coast cars. All three plants used identical VIN structures, body codes, and engine codes; the plant letter matters primarily for provenance research and for Shelby authentication (1965-66 GT350s were finished at the Allen Park pilot plant, VIN plant letter S).
