Registration is the thing that lapses, not the plate, and Tennessee sets the interval. Registration renews annually and expires on the last day of the month shown by the decal on the plate. The Department of Revenue mails a courtesy renewal notice about six weeks ahead.

A plate answers one question — which car is this. Everything that decides whether the car is worth buying is filed against the VIN it resolves to, and in Tennessee those records are separate from each other.
