Common BMW WMI prefixes (VIN positions 1–3)
| WMI prefix | What it identifies |
|---|---|
| WBA | BMW passenger car built in Germany |
| WBS | BMW M model built in Germany |
| WBY | BMW i electric model |
| 5UX / 5YM | BMW SAV built in the USA (Spartanburg) |
How a BMW VIN decodes
BMW's WMI splits by model type: WBA is a standard car, WBS an M-division model, WBY a BMW i electric, and the US Spartanburg plant — which builds the X3, X5, X6 and X7 SAVs — uses 5UX and 5YM. Positions 4–8 encode the series, body and engine; position 9 is the check digit, position 10 the model year and position 11 the plant. Note that BMW also embeds a 7-character short VIN (the last seven characters) on many parts and labels.
Because BMW builds a wide engine range per series, the VDS is what separates, for example, a 330i from an M340i — read positions 4–8 with the model year to land on the exact drivetrain.
Decode then verify
A decode confirms the factory build. BMW's full original options are documented in its build records by VIN; for accident, title and recall history, run the same VIN through a history report.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a BMW VIN starting with WBS mean?
WBS identifies a BMW M-division model built in Germany (such as an M3 or M5). WBA is a standard BMW car, WBY a BMW i electric model, and 5UX/5YM are US-built SAVs from the Spartanburg plant.
What is the BMW 7-digit short VIN?
BMW stamps the last seven characters of the full 17-character VIN on many components and labels as a 'short VIN'. It is not a separate number — it is the tail of the full VIN you enter here.
