Reading the Dodge engine code from the VIN

On a Dodge VIN, position 8 carries the engine code — the single character that distinguishes, for example, a 3.6L Pentastar V6 from a 5.7L or 6.4L HEMI V8, or a supercharged Hellcat unit. Because the same letter can be reused across model years, always read it together with position 10 (the model year) to land on the correct engine. Positions 4–7 carry the car line, body style and restraint system.

Dodge is part of Stellantis (formerly FCA / Chrysler), so it shares WMI families and assembly plants with Chrysler, Jeep and Ram; the third VIN character and the VDS are what separate a Dodge from its corporate siblings.

What the VIN won't tell you

The VIN encodes the original engine family, not whether the drivetrain has since been swapped, nor the car's accident or title history. For that, run the VIN through a full history report and confirm the engine against the under-hood emissions label.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which VIN digit is the Dodge engine code?

Position 8, the last character of the Vehicle Descriptor Section, is the Dodge engine code. Read it alongside position 10 (model year) because engine letters are reused across years.

Are Dodge and Ram VINs the same?

They share the Stellantis WMI families and plants, but Ram became its own brand in 2010. Older Ram trucks decode under Dodge truck WMIs; newer ones use Ram-specific identifiers. The VDS distinguishes the model line either way.
