How GM encodes its divisions in the VIN
All four current GM divisions share the 1G World Manufacturer Identifier for US-built vehicles, then split on the third character: 1G1 is Chevrolet car, 1GC Chevrolet truck, 1GT GMC truck, 1GK GMC SUV, 1G4 Buick and 1G6 Cadillac. Canada-built GM vehicles open with 2G and Mexico-built with 3G. Because the divisions share assembly plants and platforms, the same VDS engine and platform codes often recur across Chevrolet and GMC twins like the Silverado and Sierra.
GM trucks carry their build detail in the VDS (positions 4–8) and in the RPO/SPID option label in the glovebox, not in the VIN alone — so a GM truck VIN decode tells you the platform and engine family, while the build sheet fills in the exact options.
One decoder for every GM marque
Rather than a separate tool per brand, this decoder reads any GM VIN through the same ISO 3779 structure. For division-specific guidance use our Chevrolet and GMC decoders, and for the option codes stamped on the SPID label see the GM build-sheet guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What VIN prefix does General Motors use?
US-built GM vehicles use the World Manufacturer Identifier 1G, with the third character identifying the division: 1G1 Chevrolet car, 1GC Chevrolet truck, 1GT GMC truck, 1G4 Buick, 1G6 Cadillac. Canada uses 2G and Mexico uses 3G.
Does the GM VIN show the RPO option codes?
No. RPO (Regular Production Option) codes live on the SPID label, usually in the glovebox or trunk, not in the VIN. The VIN encodes the platform, engine family, plant and year; the SPID label lists the individual options.
