How a GMC truck VIN decodes
GMC is GM's truck-and-SUV division, so its VINs open with the GM 1G identifier and use 1GT for pickups and 1GK for SUVs. The Sierra shares its platform, engines and many VDS codes with the Chevrolet Silverado, which is why a Sierra and a Silverado of the same year decode to nearly identical engine and platform characters in positions 4–8 — the WMI is the cleanest way to tell the two apart.
Heavy-duty Sierra 2500/3500 models encode their GVWR and engine (gas vs. Duramax diesel) in the VDS, so always decode the full VIN rather than assuming the trim from the badge.
After the decode
A decode confirms the factory build; it cannot show salvage, flood or accident history. Run the same VIN through a history report for NMVTIS title brands, and check the SPID label for the exact RPO options.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a GMC and Chevrolet VIN?
Both start with the GM 1G identifier, but the third character differs: GMC trucks use 1GT and SUVs 1GK, while Chevrolet trucks use 1GC and SUVs 1GN. The platforms and engines are often shared, so the WMI is the reliable differentiator.
Where is the VIN on a GMC Sierra?
On the lower-left windshield, the driver-side doorjamb sticker, the frame rail, and your title and registration documents.
