How a trailer VIN is structured

Trailers built for road use since 1981 carry a 17-character VIN under the same ISO 3779 standard as cars, but the middle section is simpler. Positions 1–3 are the trailer manufacturer's World Manufacturer Identifier, positions 4–8 describe the trailer type, length and axle configuration, position 9 is the check digit, position 10 is the model year and 11–17 identify the plant and sequence. Because trailer makers are numerous and often small, the WMI is the key to identifying who built it.

Travel trailers and fifth-wheels (RVs) use the same structure, while semi (over-the-road) trailers from makers like Great Dane, Utility and Wabash also follow it. Note that very light or homemade trailers may instead have a state-issued ID rather than a manufacturer VIN.

Where to find and verify a trailer VIN

The VIN is usually on a metal plate riveted to the trailer's frame near the tongue/A-frame or on the left front, and on the title. Confirm the plate VIN matches the title before buying, and run the VIN through a history/theft check — trailers are common theft targets and the decode alone won't show a stolen or branded record.
