Quick Answer

What is Dirt Legal?
A private registration and titling service. Its main route is forming a Montana LLC to "act as the owner" of your vehicle, then titling and registering the vehicle in the LLC's name. It also registers vehicles in South Dakota without an LLC, handles bonded titles for 2015 and older vehicles, and issues Montana temp tags.
How much does Dirt Legal cost?
Standard registration is $399 and up, depending on vehicle type, with temp tags, custom plates and LLC formation extra. VIP registration is $4,999. Its terms add an annual LLC renewal charged to the card on file, and state fees are never refundable.
Is Montana LLC registration legal?
Dirt Legal's terms say Montana registration "can have tax implications in your home state", tell customers to get their own tax and legal advice, and say it does not guarantee any tax saving or legal outcome. Whether a vehicle you keep at home may stay registered in Montana is a question for your home state.
Before you pay a registration service

Five checks before a title or registration service touches the car

A registration service files paperwork. It doesn't check the car's past for you.

  1. 1Check the VIN's recordsTitle brands, salvage and odometer readings, before you pay to register it.
  2. 2Check for a theft reportNICB's free VINCheck covers insurer-reported thefts. Dirt Legal won't refund a stolen-reported vehicle.
  3. 3Read the refund rulesA $50 fee after 24 hours, $300 kept once the LLC is filed.
  4. 4Ask your own stateRegistration and tax rules where you live decide whether out-of-state plates work for you.
  5. 5Mail the paperwork on timeDirt Legal gives 90 days; after that, no refund.

What Dirt Legal Does

Dirt Legal says it started in 2016 with one dirt bike and has handled more than 80,000 orders since. It registers and titles cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs and UTVs, RVs, boats, military and kit vehicles. Its home page leads with street-legal paperwork for off-road vehicles, lost and bonded title recovery, same-day temp tags, and Montana LLC registration "for lower fees and no sales tax".

The Montana route works by ownership. Dirt Legal forms a Montana LLC, the LLC becomes the vehicle's owner, and the vehicle is titled and registered in Montana under the LLC's name. Its registration page says this is what "opens up Montana registration to you, no matter where you live". It promises plates in as little as a day and titles in about two weeks.

Before you order

  • Your home state: its terms say Montana registration can have tax implications there.
  • After 24 hours: a $50 fee comes off any refund.
  • After the LLC is filed: $300 is kept from a refund.
  • Stolen-reported vehicles: not refundable.

How Montana LLC Registration Works, by Dirt Legal's Account

You answer a few questions and send the documents it asks for. Dirt Legal creates a Montana LLC, which it says it does instantly once your vehicle form is complete, then titles and registers the vehicle in the LLC's name and mails the plates. You own the LLC and can use it for later orders.

The LLC is an ongoing commitment. Dirt Legal's terms describe an LLC renewal subscription: the annual state filing renews on January 1 or April 1, your choice at signup, charged to the card on file. Its tax calculator adds that "exact savings depend on state laws; consult a tax professional."

How Dirt Legal's Montana LLC registration works, with the terms that apply

What Its Terms Say About Taxes and the Law

Dirt Legal's terms, last updated May 19, 2026, are direct about where the risk sits. "Get your own tax and legal advice. Montana registration can have tax implications in your home state. We are not your lawyer or CPA." Customers agree to comply with all federal, state and local laws when using the LLC and the vehicles registered to it.

They also say Dirt Legal does not guarantee any specific tax saving, legal outcome, registration outcome or title issuance, that its liability is capped at what you paid in the previous 12 months or $500, whichever is greater, and that most disputes go to binding arbitration in Flathead County, Montana, under Montana law.

Montana or South Dakota

Dirt Legal sells both, and its own comparison draws the line on ownership. South Dakota registration is in your own name, with no LLC to form or maintain. It says South Dakota charges no sales tax on private-party purchases, requires no emissions test or safety inspection, and has some of the lowest annual fees in the country.

It positions Montana for high-value vehicles, such as exotics, high-end cars and RVs, where it says avoiding sales tax saves the most, at the cost of forming an LLC and paying its annual fees. Those are its descriptions; check what your own state requires for a vehicle you garage there.

Refunds and Cancelling

Its refund policy is detailed. Cancel before you send your vehicle documents and you can get a refund, but requests more than 24 hours after ordering carry a $50 fee for registration and titling services, and once the Montana LLC is filed, $300 is kept. Completed services, such as VIN checks, temp tags, registrations and titles, aren't refunded.

You have 90 days to mail your paperwork in the envelope it provides; after that the order can still be cancelled but no longer refunded, though it offers store credit. If a financed vehicle's lender is Synchrony Bank and you have no title or MCO, it can't register the vehicle and refunds minus $35. Vehicles reported stolen aren't refundable. Its phone line is 800-994-7513.
