Common Ford WMI prefixes (VIN positions 1–3)
| WMI prefix | What it identifies |
|---|---|
| 1FA | Ford passenger car, USA |
| 1FT | Ford truck (F-Series, Ranger), USA |
| 1FM | Ford SUV / MPV (Explorer, Escape), USA |
| 2F / 3F | Ford built in Canada / Mexico |
| WF0 | Ford built in Germany / Europe |
How a Ford VIN is structured
Ford VINs open with 1F for US-built vehicles, then use the third character to split body type: 1FA is a car, 1FT a truck, and 1FM an SUV or multipurpose vehicle. Canada-built Fords use 2F and Mexico-built use 3F, while European Fords carry WF0. The engine is encoded in position 8 of the VDS — a single character that distinguishes, for example, the F-150's various EcoBoost, naturally aspirated and PowerBoost engines.
On the F-Series, positions 4–7 carry the series, GVWR class, cab style and chassis, which is why the VIN can tell apart an F-150 from an F-250 and a regular cab from a SuperCrew even when the badges have been swapped.
Ford VIN decode vs. the Marti Report and build sheet
A VIN decode gives you the factory-encoded basics. For the full original build of a Ford — paint, axle, options and order data — Ford's door data plate and, for older Mustangs and trucks, the Marti Report go further. See our Ford build-sheet guide for that, and run a history report on the VIN for title and accident records.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a Ford VIN starting with 1FT mean?
1FT is Ford's World Manufacturer Identifier for a US-built Ford truck, such as the F-150, F-250 or Ranger. 1FA is a US Ford car and 1FM is a US Ford SUV.
Which VIN position is the Ford engine code?
Position 8 — the last character of the Vehicle Descriptor Section — is the Ford engine code. Cross-reference it with the model year (position 10) because the same letter can map to different engines across years.
Is this the same as the Ford Pro VIN decoder?
Ford Pro is Ford's commercial-fleet portal. This is an independent decoder that reads the public ISO 3779 VIN structure for any Ford — retail or fleet — for free, and adds an optional full history report.
