Does a VIN encode the transmission?
Honestly: usually not directly. The VIN's Vehicle Descriptor Section (positions 4–8) reliably encodes the engine family and, on many vehicles, the drive configuration (FWD/RWD/AWD). A handful of manufacturers do encode a transmission attribute in the VDS, but most do not break out the specific gearbox — so reading the transmission 'from the VIN' is only partly possible, and any tool that promises an exact transmission for every VIN is overstating what the standard carries.
What you can do is decode the engine and drivetrain from the VIN, then use the year, make, model and engine to look up which transmissions that exact configuration shipped with.
Where the transmission is actually documented
The authoritative source is the vehicle's build/option data, not the VIN: GM's RPO code on the SPID label, Ford's door data plate / Marti Report, and the transmission's own ID tag or pan-stamp. The under-hood emissions label and the owner's manual also list the drivetrain. Our build-sheet guides explain how to pull those option codes by VIN.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I find my exact transmission from the VIN?
Only partially. The VIN encodes the engine family and often the drive type, but most manufacturers do not encode the specific transmission. Use the decoded year/make/model/engine to look up the transmissions offered, or check the build/option codes and the transmission's ID tag.
Which VIN position is the engine code?
On most vehicles, position 8 (the last character of the descriptor section) is the engine code. Read it together with position 10, the model year.
