The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI); characters four through eight decode the model line, body and engine; the ninth is a check digit; the tenth encodes the model year; the eleventh is the assembly plant; and characters twelve through seventeen form the vehicle's unique serial number.
A VIN beginning with “2” was built in Canada; a “1”, “4” or “5”was built in the United States.
